Default trailer registration

I recently bought a fixer upper day sailor from my neighbor for a token sum. They basically gave it to me so I could teach the kids to sail,. Very generous and very cool of them.

Boat and trailer belonged to her grandfather, and he left it there 12 years ago and moved to California.

He passed away 10 years ago. Maryland says the only way I can register the trailer is to have the executor of the will notorize a bill of sale. exector has also passed.

The owner has no way of transferring title, so i have no way of registering the trailer.

I know the home built route, but i am not interested in going down that road.

Any suggestions? DMV said executor route, or the trailer is useless.

Any ideas?

Try Maine. Apparently they will register any trailer. Im not sure if it is on the up and up in MD, but I do know some have and do register their trailers there as it is cheaper. Do a search on tidalfish.

lIKE MAINE THERE ARE SEVERAL STATES THAT WILL TITLE THE TRAILER THERE USED TO BE A COMPANY IN AL I THINK ON THE WEB THAT WOULD GET YOU A TITLE FOR A FEE THAT YOU COULD THEN TRANSFER TO YOUR HOME STATE. MY BROTHER DEALS IN OLD MOTORCYCLES SO HE USED TO USE THAM ALL THE TIME.

Thanks

I did a search on tidal fish, and it looks like MBI trailers in maine (google +MBI +trailer) is perfect for what i need. It will take care of the registration issue for me legally.

That said, I recommend everyone checkout the site and see the serious advantage to registering/reregistering your trailers there. (especially if you live in a place like Maryland)

Truth is, after a $1300 bill to register my van when I moved back to maryland, if I never give the state another dime I would be happy. Yes, I missed the 60 day limit (moving, new job, new child etc, I did miss the deadline) but I am stunned that they choose to focus on punishing folks like me, while other offenses are not pursued. I don't disagree that I should have paid a penalty, but is $1300 really a punishment that fist my "crime". whine whine whine, but they will likely not see another penny from me that i can avoid.

Are you saying you're going to register your trailer in Maine even though you live in Maryland or am I misunderstanding your post? If you live in MD and keep and drive the trailer in MD, you will need MD tags and registration. They check.

When I lived in MD I used the Sandy Point State Park boat ramps. I didn't know it, but the expiration year and month stickers on my trailer tag were reversed (left and right). I came back one day to find a note on my truck stating that if I came back without correcting this, I would get a ticket. I had to go to the DMV and buy replacement stickers.

RW, I am not saying I understand the logic behind it, but according to the below, I see no issues with doing this

MGA Statutes Text Page 1

All 3 of the below conditions must be met:

(f) A trailer or semitrailer operated in intrastate service need not be registered in this State if:
(1) It is registered in another state;
(2) The truck tractor or other vehicle that is towing it is registered in this State; and
(3) The registered owner of the truck tractor or other towing vehicle has at least one trailer or semitrailer registered in this State for each truck tractor also registered in this State.

RW,

I dont believe it is technically legal unless you have more trailers than tow vehicles as indicated by cjd, but some locals use Maine and swear it is legal. I would not risk it under normal circumstances but the OPs situation is one where I might. There have been many arguments about it on tidalfish

Unless you have another trailer registered in MD, I think #3 is going to bite you.

Now suppose you register it in another state. Can you then re-register it in MD without problems? Can you sell it to someone who will then sell it back to you with a bill of sale that can be used to register the trailer?

Of course, the issue may never come up with the ME tags, but if you are questioned, the LEO may not be familiar with the regs you posted. You could end up in court fighting a ticket and even though you might win, it will cost you time and money.

The other side of the coin is states like SC where trailers do not have to be registered. While this saves a few $$ per year, the downside is that if anyone steals your trailer, it's pretty much theirs to keep and use. They don't have to prove it's theirs to register it and there are no tags to identify it.

I do have another trailer, so I am covered there, but I agree it might take some explaining.

If you go back to the beginning, this all came up because it is almost impossible for me to tag the trailer i bought. The money savings is just an added perk at this point

Well the section you quoted applies to INTRASTATE trucking and is to allow business owners to perchase and register vehicles in other staes they do business in. Getting the trailer registered in another state will give you legal papers of ownership. Choosing to not use those papers to register in your home state could once again get you stuck for the big fines and penalties. I am not in charge of legal advice but I would get the trailer registered and then transfer it to your home state then you would be completely legal.

I appreciate the advice. You have probably identified the most logical path. I have no doubt that that is the intention of the law.

Is the notion of commercial intrinsic to the phrase Intrastate?
