Default 4 Wheel Drive Clunk

I have a 99 Tahoe with 102,000 miles. I put it in 4 hi the other day and it locked in okay and drove fine. When I stopped and put it into neutral to shift out, I got a huge clunk from the front axle I am assuming disengaging. I do not seem to remember it being as loud or abrubt before. Does anyone have any experiece with this on this model or the same sort of problems on another vehicle. Any suggestins or ideas would be great. Thanks!

Your U-Joints are on their way out ...crawl under it and see if by hand you have any slop in the shaft (twisting motion) if so there you go time to replace the u-joints...

Before disengaging the transfer case it is best to backup a few feet to relieve the torque build-up . That was more than likely what you head . there is also the possibility of the U-joints as previously mentioned. If you do not have manual free wheeling hubs, It would certainly be a wise purchase. It will save $$$$on fuel and maintenance
