Default Need Rod for TLD 30II 2 speed

John,

I considering of purchasing a TLD 30II 2 speed for Tarpon, king, grouper etc. I am thinking of purchasing a star rod 6' medium/heavy 30-50. What are your thoughts and what will this cost me? Thanks. Steve

Get the tld 25. Don't need the two speed for that stuff. A lot cheaper.

Thanks for the reply. I already own that reel and I would agree the TLD 25 is a great reel. This purchase is actually a gift and I was looking for an all around set-up. Thanks. Steve

Based on the target species you've listed (Tarpon, Kingfish, and Grouper) that you want to use the rig for, you're going to have a tough time finding a "one reel/rod" for all -- they're just different fish. I certainly would not go with the TLD 30II, or a 6' Star rod -- If I want to troll for dolphin and other pelagics, ok; but not Grouper/Kings/'poons.

For tarpon and kings, you need a rod with lots of line capacity and a smooth drag -- but not a truck stopping drag. For grouper, you don't need much line, but the reel needs to have a drag that'll stop an F250 that wants to move from the driveway to the garage! The TLD 30II would be ok for large grouper in deep water, but I'd leave it at home if I was going after Tarpon or Kings.

I'd visit a local tackle shop and tell them what you want to do and ask for their recommendations. If this a "long-range" gift and you don't have a tackle shop that deals in saltwater, tell us where the rod & reel will be used and I'll bet we can put you in touch with a local shop there!
