Default which tabs for a north river?

Tom,

I have a north river jet boat, site is "www.northriverjetboats.com" for reference. The boat I have is a sportster with a 175 sport jet, it is 19 foot with a 66" bottom, loaded weight of 2300#. Wonderfull boat, does skinny water like no ones business. But when I have my kicker on it, 133# off the swim platform, and a buddy who actually qualifies as two people according to the coast guard , I would like to be able to have a little more control of my attitude, or at least the boats...

I never see any on other sleds and I was just curious what you would suggest if anything. If you think this will help, and I do, then I'll take some measurments and see what will fit, there at two transducer mounts to work around.

Thanks for any information,

Daren

Daren,

Thanks for the question. Cool boat! Trim Tabs would be great on your “sled”. I have a quick question. The picture of the back of your boat

shows a little lip on the transom of the boat. can you tell me how deep the lip is? We make a special mounting plate for aluminum boats with a transom lip that makes installing Tabs really easy! Let me know and I will give you some ideas.

Tom,

Here are some measurments I took. The sides are symetrical so I'll just give them for one side. The total width is 26". The bottom lip you refer to is actually a double thickness that is not equal in depth (the top layer is shorter than the bottom layer). It also varies in depth from a narrow of 7/8" on the side to 1 1/8" on the outside edge of the transducer mount, 1 1/2" on the inside edge of the transducer mount, and finally an overlap of 1 3/4" under the knee brace for the swim platform. There is also a gap of about 1/4" between the bottom of the transducer bracket and the bottom lip. The bracket is 9" wide and overhangs the bottom lip by about 1/8".

Do turning strakes make any differences, if so there are two on each side between the inside edge of the transducer bracket and the pump. Ideally tabs would be placed as far to the outside of the boat as possible, correct?

Let me know what you think would be my best option or options would be.

Thanks again,

Daren

Daren,

Thanks for the info, I will look at your options when I get back into the office Monday and have all my technical specs at hand.

Daren,

Here is what I would propose:

We manufacture a hinge designed to sit on top of the lip extending past the transom on aluminum boats. Usually the lip is a bit wider than yours, but the leaf of the hinge is 1-1/4” and it will stick a little bit past the lip. Also we want to stay away from the water that flows forward from the bucket when the jet is in reverse so we would use an 8” span against the hull and 12” chord fore to aft Tab that we make. The hinge is supplied without holes so they can de drilled in the stainless to match the lip. Also I think that the speedo pickup might have to move inboard a bit, and wonder if you are going to mount a depth / fish transducer?

The Tabs can mount over a strake, but you are correct in that the further out the better particularly on a jet since we want to miss that reverse water flow when you back up.

I could have the Tabs assembled and sent to you to see if they would fit. Then if you wanted to proceed you could purchase an M80 kit from a dealer and we would simply swap out the stainless since all the other parts would be the same.

Let me know what you think.

Tom,

Sorry about the delay getting back to you, I had a trip to go on. Anyway, I have enough faith in your company and in my fabrication skills that I went ahead and purchased a m-80 kit. Do the same recommendations apply about the placement of the tabs to the outside? ie 3-4" from the chine.

Off to watch the video and then I be back with more questions I sure.

Thanks again,

Daren

Daren,

Yes 3-4 inches in from the chine, But on your boat lets see if you can keep it at 2-1/2" to 3" so we can keep the Tabs out of the way od the waterflow from the jet drive when you are in reverse.

Tom,

You mentioned earlier about a set of plates that bolt on horizontially. Is there any chance you could send me a set so that I can see if they will work?

If they don't work I'm not opposed to welding on additional channel on my transom to mount the regular style.

Does the actuator need to be mounted on the same plane as the hinge plate? ie could the plates be mounted to channel and the actuator to the transom?
