Default Trim tabs Tripp angler 24

I have a 24' Tripp angler cutty cabin with a 2002 Yanmar 4 cyl. 230 hp. It cruises at about 17kt @ 2400rpm's. A friend of mine suggested trim tabs to get the bow down and have a better ride. I have no problems with the way it rides now, I actually love the way it rides, would it ride better with them?

Thanks for the help...

First of all I grew up in New England, went to Tabor in Marion in the ‘70s sailed on Concordias out of Padanaram! I am familiar with Tripp Anglers in fact they are my idea of what a real boat should look like!

Installing Trim Tabs on a traditional “conservative” inboard powered hull does indeed improve the ride of an already superior and seakindly boat. A better way to put it is that the Trim Tabs will allow the desirable characteristics of that design to work over a broader range of conditions including speed, sea conditions and weight distribution.

I have worked with many owners of this type of hull and installing Tabs has always resulted in results that were worth the effort.

One of the more obvious benefits is that if you have passengers aboard and their weight causes the boat to run unevenly, using the Tabs to bring the boat back to a level ride instead of making them move about is a great thing (for my boat and family not having to tell my girls where to sit is worth having Tabs even if they did nothing else!).

On an inboard powered boat with a hull design like yours, properly sized Trim Tabs will let you run at lower throttle settings and still stay on plane. This is a wonderful thing when running in a chop. The forefoot of the boat will still be in the water and can cleave the oncoming waves. You will find that the boat will be likely running at a higher speed at a lower throttle setting, and the ride will be a lot smoother since the forefoot is cutting the waves as opposed to the flatter sections of the bottom of the hull encountering the waves. This will be the real benefit for you and is what I mean by extending the range of the desirable characteristics of the boat.

On a boat like you’re the key to getting the best results from Trim Tabs will be using a
”good size”. Since we don’t have to worry about an outboard getting in the way you can use just about the entire run of the transom for the Trim Tabs.

If she were my boat (and I wish she was!) I would install a set of 24” x 9” Trim Tabs.

I hope this is helpful and would be delighted to answer any additional questions you may have.

Thank you very much for that reply. Very helpful. You have convinced me to get them. Besides that, I played a lot of golf in Marion at Kittansett club (friends were members). Knew a couple people that went to Tabor, great school. I live about a mile from Concordia (padanaram) and have a slip at Davis and Tripps. Unfortunately Concordia has sold and is going to be a Beneteau dealer I am happy to hear that you like the style of my boat...I couldn't be happier with it. A lot of people I talk to say its a death trap, but I think it rides better than most boats of that style. I am hoping to get her in the water this weekend, but I just purchased new electronics so I have a lot of work to do.

I just joined THT today and didn't expect to get an answer this fast and so detailed.

Thank you very much.

Tom,

I had another question...What would be a good brand to buy? are they all pretty much the same, should I stay away from a certain brand....I know nothing about them beside what you told me yesterday, so anything will help.

Thank you very much.

Tripp24,

Keep in mind that I am the OEM Sales Manager and Director of Client Services for Bennett Marine! Having said that I recommend Bennett Tabs! There are many differences between the brands that have a direct impact on the longevity of the system, particularly if the boat is kept in saltwater.

For a non biased answer you may want to post that question in the main boating forum. I would also encourage you to use the search function here (and any other site) and do a search under Trim Tabs to get the input from folks who have Tabs on their boats.
