Default Avet MXL drag

I just purchased an Avet MXL 2 sp. The owners manual indicates that the reel has a dry drag. Should I grease the drag washers, as this seems to be the popular thing to do?
Thanks
Matt

I would not. With any new reel I remove the screws and lube them with grease to protect them from corrosion -- but I fish the reel to break in the drag. I also now put some grease along the contact surfaces between the sideplate and frame to make it harder for saltwater to penetrate.

Greasing drag washers has advocates and for some reels it is an improvement. Alan did a recent string on an Avet that was very informative. For Avet, I'd just grease the screws and fish it. If you're not happy with the drag, then look at doing something to make it do what you want.

I just bought an MXL myself and will fish it for a while then make a decision.

No need to grease them.

The MXL series reels have carbon fiber drags that are meant to run dry. Some anglers find the drags a bit heavy for fishing light line, esp. some of the SKA folks. There's a solid spacer on the left side of the spool that can be replaced with Belleville washers; this reduces the drag considerably while still allowing the preset drag detents and live bait setting operate. One can play around with the Bellevilles and try doubling some or all up, replacing a set of Bellevilles with a couple of small stainless steel washers, etc., until the desired drag curve is achieved.

avet is the last reel manufacturer that still uses a dry carbon fiber drag on their two speed reels. penn has their dura drag, shimano has their original carbon fiber and teflon grease drag washer. daiwa, okuma, tiburon and accurate have all followed suit and now use greased carbon fiber in their flagship two speed reels.

if it's what you really want to do, then running the working side of the avet drag washer without grease is fine, but please at least consider greasing the metal contact surface of the spool and the back of the drag washer. you might want to avoid this......

That makes sense. I will have to send it out to have that done. I am not about to open that thing up. I will put it to use in the Keys May 23-June 3 and see how it works. Then go from there. Thanks for the info gentleman.
