Random Quote: A bad day Fishin, is better than a good day at work.
I was looking for some stuff at Home Depot yesterday when I had a brain fart.....why not make a super cheap reel spooling device. Slapped this together for around $10 to $15 dollars......better than the $150 I would spend on a "marine store" version. Do other people here have spool holders they have made?
BTW - my design has a super smooth drag system using toilet bowl washers. The white rubber pieces pinching the spool are made for the legs of chairs. The pic makes it look lopsided but it isn't. I can place the base of this device in a bench vise that will keep it still when in use.
Up here we use a 5 gallon bucket with notches, and a dowel or arrow. Keep the water constantly flowing and it gives perfect tension every time. Plus the bucket is alway with the boat anyway - multifunction.
I like it. How do you secure it when in use ? I think a fighting chair on the patio would be appropriate. Just think - you might even be able to get some mid-week practice using neighborhood kids.
Elusive - Yesterday I put two holes through the base which will allows me to run two long dowels through the base and into holes on the exterior work bench to secure the "thing" when in use......I could also use my heavy bench vise in the shop to just clamp down on the base
David, I put the spool on a dowel, get Debi to hold it, stick a hand towel in her mouth and drape it over the spool. Perfect tension and I don't have to listen to her.
Gee David, I just drilled a hole in the edge of my work bench that would allow a machine screw(5/16 x ?) to thread into it. I put a washer on each side of the spool, run the machine screw thru all three and into the bench and tighten the screw to give me the desired tension.
The rod is connected to the spool, and wood holds the rod and the spool, then the vise holds the wood and the rod and the spool, on the bench that holds the vise and the wood and the rod in the spool, that holds the line on the spool on the rod in the wood in the vise on the bench and someone has a wife with a towel that will make this all work while the toilet is out of order due to missing parts.
I normally just stick a screwdriver in a vise to let the spool spin while I add tension with my fingers to guide the line on the reel, but I can see where this 5 man operation could be a lot more fun.
Being patriotic I'd patent it, just to keep other folks from wasting their time, and America productive.

Hardly the spanking I expected......and this coming from a guy that just made a tuna wet & wild slide that can double as a gunnel mounted urinal.
Where would I store the chum? How would I secure the device to my rig? Where and how would I store the device when underway? What is it like to be with a man? (I just want to bring up a subject you can speak with authority on)
In all seriousness, I spooled a reel last night with this contraption and noticed one thing you may want to consider. The rubber pads I have pressed against the spool causes the wing nuts to "walk" down the thread. I stopped this movement by clamping a vise grip on each wing nut....that eliminated the "walking". What I really liked is that I could load a 6/0 reel with a heck of a lot more pressure than the "hold the line in my fingers" routine. I wanted to do this since I can not stand it when I load a reel, take it out for a day and when retrieving the line under pressure I realize I have left at least 20% of the spool capacity without any line on it.
