my $20 mr twister lasted one year and burnt up...any suggestions out there for electric filet knifes? mainly catch speckled trout so i don't need anything to handle big stuff...
I guess my question would be, "why do you need an electric filet knife"? I am so d*#m dangerous with the little handheld one, both fileting fish and sharpening, that the thought an electric one just scares me. Plus, I don't catch enough fish to need an electric one. Does the electric one make it a lot easier when you are just fileting a few fish or do you really need to catch a bunch to make it really useful?
the electric one makes it very easy....even fileting just a dozen fish is much quicker with the electric, plus getting thru tougher fish like redfish or black drum is simpler. i don't catch a lot of fish either so it's probably not cost justified but what in fishing really is
The American Angler Salt Water model has metal gears and a 2 year warranty, plus 2 sets of blades that are very strong and sharp, but easy to use. It is the best electric I've used so far, and Wal-Mart had them for less than $30 around Christmas last year.
I'll second the American Angler. I burned up a MR. Twister in less than three months. My American Angler is over three years old now. It is need of replacement but I have definitely gotten my money's worth out of it.
I love my Rapala. Plugs into cig. lighter, clamps on a battery, also has a AC adapter. It is a bit slow with the AC adapter. It'll clean the heck out of fish on the tailgate while plugged into the cig lighter.
Interesting reviews. The chordless Freedom is a piece of junk. The battery doesn't hold enough charge to clean more than 3 or 4 fish. I agree the grip is not very ergonomically designed and it is easy to hit the blade release. All the pending I do like the plug in Angler better than any other one I have used.
By the way, the knife in the review is NOT the saltwater version. I've never had the problem with my hand slipping, and the "shark" blades are much easier to turn after you cut down to the spine than are the regular style. I'm not a pro by any standard, but the Angler Salt Water works better for me than any other brand, and I've owned about all of them. That thing really speeds through trout when you use the "belly-up" method.
Personally, I'd go to wally world or ebay and buy a couple of household knives for price you pay for one "fishing" type. I have an older GE that works just fine. Like the guy said..they all burn up eventually.

I add my agreements and recommendations to the American Angler. I have used one for 3 years now and need to replace the blades, but the unit itself is going strong. I have cleaned as many as 150 Kingfish, Cobia, Amberjack, and spanish. Probably 200 speckled sea trout and whatever else happened along. The knife is a wonderful addition to my cleaning bench. One item that is a must to have with the knife is a fillet glove. It won't help with punctures, but it won't allow the knife to cut you. Wonderful items, the knife and the glove. Wal Mart carries the knife and Bass Pro carries the glove. Such a deal I couldn't do without....
My camp Podna' and I aren't what you would call "purists."
We catch and clean a lot of fish, many of them "non-target species" like sheephead, black drum, etc.
I have tried and burned-up almost every kind of electric knife(Mr. Twister, Am Angler-toast.)
My favorite, by far, you can find in the kitchen appliance of your local Wal-mart for 12 bucks.
The Black and Decker Slice Rite. They don't get hot in your hand, they won't short out.
The only thing they eventually do, is get so the blades want to pop-out while cutting.
But that's only after months of punishment.
