I took my fishing buddy Dave and his daughter Blair out bottomfishing with me on Saturday off Stuart at the Wickstrom Reef, a huge ship that was sunk two months ago. Funding for the reef was donated by Karl Wickstrom, publisher of Florida Sportsman Magazine, and the Martin County Anglers Club.
After we got to the main numbers and then "mowed the lawn" following the chartplotter, we had a good idea of the wreck's layout and decided to micro-drift the eastern side of it to minimize catching any "10,000 Ton Wreckfish".
First drift, BAM! a nice 20 pound Black Grouper.
Second drift lots of nibbles but no hookups.
Third drift Balir nails a 17 pound true Red Snapper. A few more drifts, NADA. Then I get a 12 pound true Red.
A few more drifts and Ba-Bing! Blair cranks a nice 14 pound 4 ounce Red Grouper up on a squid and circle hook-fluorocarbon rig.
We weighed all our fish in at Snook Nook in Jensen Beach for a local fishing club's year-long tournament and cleaned the fish back at my crib.
On Sunday I thumbed thru the 2003 IGFA book and I realized Blair's Red Grouper was a potential record. I did some more checking and yep, she now has a Pending IGFA World Record Grouper in the Junior Female Division! We sent in all the necessary proofs and materials to Dania.
Once again, we should all thank Karl and the MCAC for their generosity. If this wreck is producing fish like this now after only two months, imagine what it'll be like when it "gets established"!
