Default Handle position on reel?

Hello gentlemen, I got a 400H Diawa that I use for Grouper digging, I notice that the handle have 2 holes to adjust lenght. Which is best for grouper digging? Make the handle longer or shorter? Thank you

A longer handle will give you more leverage. Think like a cave man

I don't fish grouper her in MA, but for all my reels where I have the option to do so, I make it long. More torque ( fulcrum & level principal) can be applied.

I fish cod in 250' of water ofter getting 20 lb Cod. I imagine that should be equivalent to digging grouper.

Yeall all that AND the SPEED of the spool will be increased by the longer handle. Think larger gear turning smaller gear. The smaller gear revolves much faster than the larger. I bought some used penn 309s with aftermarket handle extentions. The extra length really cranks in the line for bottom fishing, retrieiving trolling lures etc etc. I would suggest setting the realls up with the maximum length on the handle.

Ok call me a dumb A$$, but the longer handle gives you more speed, right? More speed=less power, right. Kind of like the low gear on a 10 speed bike. Lots of turns of the peddles = a few turns of the wheel. If that's right, then the shorter handle will be the "power" position. Lower gears are what I like for grouper and snapper, not speed.

You have it correct. However, you feel unless the longer handle really handicaps you in terms of fish fighting power, the extra speed of hauling a baitless look up 250' has advantages. Follow me?

This whole debate is really what the "two speed" reel is all about.

Personally IMO, the longer the better.

There is a reason they manufacture those long, LONG handles for the 113 and 114 Penns. Bottom fishing in deep water. You will appreciate the leverage of the long handle on the fulcrum of the reels gear set, even though you are numerically lowering the gear ratio, you are increasing the leverage on the pivot point, thus, reducing the effort (energy) needed to turn the axle.

MrPat,

Spool revolutions are still proportionate to handle revolutions (unless of course it is a 2 speed reel). The longer handle provides more power at the sake of speed. The longer handle travels farther in one revolution but the reel travels the same. Is it clear as mud now?

thubert has it right.....i almost had to think there for a minute.....longer handle= more power....the retrieve speed might not change that much, but the distance your hand travels will.....
