Well, as the scale on the reel indicates, if you put the lever on 18, the drag will be 18 lbs, which corresponds well to the IGFA 50-lb, all-mono entire range style of fishing it was made for. However, the lever goes a bit beyond the scale, so the end result is more like 22 lbs.
This is not neccesarily set in stone however. I myself have previously tuned the drag by a factor of 2.2, which means that the scale now denotes kilograms. 18 kg ≈ 40 lbs.
Do note, that this entails an entire range of zero to forty pounds, across the throw of the lever. This as opposed to most other reels which may have a higher maximum, but only effectively utilize a much smaller range... ie the max may be thirty, but it starts at twenty... thereby equivalent to a useable range of only ten pounds.
All of the above is as pertains to the Special Series. The WP Series is different. It offers a more conventional drag apparatus with preset adjustment. The preset allows a very wide range of adjustment, and the maximum should be about the same-- 30, 35 lbs or so.
