Need some help selecting a new set of foul weather gear as my West Marine set finally bit the dust after 15 years.
I know everyone likes Grunden's, but I'm in South Carolina, and would like something that is a little more breathable as I'm often wearing this stuff is the spring, summer, and fall in addition to the winters, which are pretty mild down here.
Not looking to spend a fortune - may just go with another West Marine set - but looking for some suggestions. Need bibs and a jacket - something pretty rugged as I am pretty harsh on my gear (no Frogg Toggs).
I know this topic has been covered before, and I did a search, just looking for suggestions on something that meets my specific needs and where to purchase (I need to be specific - this is going on my Christmas list).
The stuff made by Bimini Bay is pretty good and relatively cheap. A friend of mine let me borrow his "ultimate pullover" and it was waterproof and very comfortable. I think it was only 35 bucks too. Might be to warm for summer use though.
helly hansen here also,,plus p/u some cheap extra outfits from ocean state job lot for emergency back up for anyone on the boat not prepaired for $15.00 top and bottoms,,seem durable,,probally throw aways,,we'll see

Gore-tex or similar hi-quality breathable gear. I'd stay clear of vinyl, rubber or PVC.
Blow boaters (sailing folk) outerware stuff can be very good stuff, sometimes pricey and can be not terribly fish friendly but comfortable and likely better looking (ex. Henri Lloyd, Gill, Helly Hanson, etc). Might also consider Cabelas' house brand gear. I've been using their guidewear bib pants and jacket for a couple seasons and am very happy with them. I used prior to that Mustang floater bib and jacket but found myself clammy, damp and eventually uncomfortable and not a happy angler. Cabelas' stuff goes on sale regularly so there's some good deal to be had.
gore tex (or any other similar breathable "waterproof" fabric) is not truly waterproof, esp in day after day of wet conditions (hence it is not very popular in Alaska) . . .
It also will be disgusting after a few days of serious fishing, it will stain easily . . . you can't just hose it off like pvc.
my brother just bought a pair of Under Amour fishing pants..100% Waterproof, 100% Wind proof...$80. They look pretty good....verdict is out if they are worth 80 bones.
def gotta go with the white grundens the clipper series i think is the lightest one, def would be my choice i use those and then my heavy duty orange for the winter.
I checked the Grunden website. The clipper series in listing under the "standard" type gear and is 13.2 oz per yard. The clipper series has a cotton base layer and pvc top layer.
The Petrus series is much lighter, also listed as "standard", but 5.0 oz. per yard. This series has a polyester base layer and a poly/pvc top layer.
They make tons of different products and some are very heavy. Each series is offered in several colors so, the color is not totally helpful.
I ordered the Cabela's Guidewear stuff a few years back. It was quite expensive at around $300. It seemed to be incredibly well made, but it did not fit my body very well ... neither the bibs nor the jacket, so I sent it back.

http://www.froggtoggs.com/ We have fished and been out doors for 54 years and this is the best we have worn. Light, totally water proff and I use these just to break the wind as well. Turn a hose loose on them, will not get wet. They are almost like wearing nothing for foul weather. Stores ln a small space and they are washable. Great product.
