Van Staal oil vs lube

I have a 1999/2000 VS 150 purchased new not 2nd hand. I have NEVER done anything to it except wash it off with a sopy sponge after a trip out.

I recently opened it up and was surprised to find:

1) no outer o-ring seal
2) just a small amount of thick clear grease on the main gear.

When I took it apart and cleaned it up with wd 40/tooth brush because there was a little corrosion on the main gears. I lubed it up with yamaha blue grease and it winds better than before.

I know some guys fill these up with 90wt oil and that's the way they came from the factory for a while.

2 questions: Why did they switch from oil bath to a lube(grease) and which is better??????
