Default Looking for a Kick Butt Filet Knife!!

My birthday was Monday and a buddy has offered to buy me a "good" filet knife. I have an assortment of the classic Rapala wood handle knives and am ready for something better. Most of the fish I clean are large grouper. Any suggestions?? I do a lot of snapper fishing too but I prefer an electric filet knife for the smaller fish.

Welcome, Easy and timely post!

My buddy and I have been talking about using something other than those Rapalas. I too fillet big grouper and could stand to have something that will do a better job of skinning them...

Also, sure do miss my old home down on Lemon Bay, off Lemon Ave. Caught me a ton of fish there in the ten years we lived there...

Spend money on a very good sharpener and any decent fillet knife becomes a good one. I use them all from Dexters to no names. If the blade is so cheap that it rusts heavily, it gets tossed. Other than that, my knives are dangerously sharp. Make a mistake and it will cost you. Best money I ever spent was on the sharpener.

Best for the $$$ forschner. Many styles and sizes. For grouper I would get the "rectangular" (almost) with the scalloped blade. Somewhat felxible too.

My birthday was at the beginning of september, I got one of the new 9 inch titanium coated bucks. got the utility knife for my belt too. thing is SICK! The utility knife is excellent too, good sheath for the belt that holds it nice and snug.

There are two things you need to do.

1)Get your knife PROFESSIONALLY sharpened. You will not believe what this does for the effectiveness of your knife. I butter knife that is professionally sharpened will get a hair in half.

2)Get an electric fillet knife that is either 12/24v or wall power. They make quick work of any fish especially the big ones that have bigger diameters.

Forschner, Cemeter for the tunnys etc, traditional filet for all else, get a diamond steel, your good to go. There's no point in spending more

Those things work great for all non-asian angle knives.

Rust is good, high carbon steel, like in the wood handled Dexters, rusts but it takes and keeps an edge much better than a stainless blade.

I guess im the cheapo, years ago i bought a browning fillet knife on clearance at a local tackle shop or somewhere, and it has been the best knife, given i dont clean fish everyday, maybe once every two weeks. Works well on snapper, beeliners, grouper, sheepshead, and red drum. Then i have a slightly smaller and more flexible knife made by case that i use for my sea trout.

The browning had a black rubber handle, have used it and holds its edge well after 3 years.

The sharpener in the Cabelas link is what I have, different color but the 3 slot sharpener. I do not recommend an electric knife because I really bend my knives while cleaning fish and an electric sharpener won't do that. I have seen a friend inshore fish with one and do it in an incredibly short time but old school for me. I have tried every sharpener there is and the Chefs Choice is the best I have personally found.

I was going to say avoid this knife at all costs. I've gone through two blades- the tip broke! I lost mine at the dock. If you do get one make sure you keep the blade in the sheath whenever it is not being used as my blade became nicked very easily.

I bought a simple rapala with a sharpener today and made very quick work of my fish. Maybe I needed to sharpen my Cutco a little more religiously, but it never worked as easily or as quickly as the rapala.

The best I have owned is the Wusthof Grand Prix - retails for about $80, but I just bought one recently for much less online somewhere.

The best value in a fillet knife I have found so far is the Forschner. I found them online for around $12 or so.
