lies and more lies.the fish was 68 inches.it was 5 inches over the limit and the length of the fish was measured standing on top of a 30 foot fishing pier.eyeballing a 24 inch king is one thing since it can be hand reeled up but this sailfish was a crap shootWHY ARE YOU GUYS STILL DENYING THE FACT IT WAS KILLED ON A HOPE AND A PRAYER?you keep defending the actions no matter if it was legal or not makes no difference.TELLING ME YOU CAN PICK A POINT FROM 63 TO 68 INCHES 30 FEET AWAY and expect anyone with comon sense to believe that and its not going to happen.i guarantee if i pull out 60 inches of tape and ask you at 30 feet away is it 63 you would know the answer right?
the 11 inches in my previous post was predicated on the old 57" limit-I did not know it was now 63". the fish is still 5" over the limit and LEGAL. I don't know how they determined that this fish was legal and neither do you but it was LEGAL.
like I said in one of my previous posts, if this bothers you so much station yourself at this pier, catch someone killing an undersize sailfish, and execute a citizen's arrest on the perpertrators.
Hi guys, I figure if my name & picture is getting smeared all over the internet by "Desperado79" I should at least have a chance to defend myself =) I'm the one with the kayak. Also as far as the other 2 pics the fish were both legal. Very few sailfish are seen much less caught from pier or kayak in our area, this year has been better then normal. The sail on the pier was caught by a great kid named Jake, these guys spend countless hours on the pier, so for them all to make a judgement call from the pier, they all thought it was legal and it was.
My first sailfish was caught right outside the draw on the 2nd sandbar off PCB out of my kayak. It was not dragged to the beach, a guy grabbed my yak & I still had to put pressure on this fish when in the breakers. I did remove the fish for less then a minute for a picture of which I thought would be a lifetime catch out of a yak. I now know they are not suppose to be removed from the water if you don't plan on taking them. He was then released back into the water and swam away STRONG. I even caught a much bigger sail from my kayak 2 days later, it was released yakside in the water. I don't know what "Deperado79's" problem is but he was banned from the Pensacola Fishing Forum. FYI
First sail that was released:
2nd sail released yakside:
Is it anymore ethical to kill the fish and bring it in than it is to dropback a pitch bait straight to the fish's stomach and guthook it, bring it to the boat with blood pooring from the gills or its stomach hanging out of its mouth and then turn it loose as a release??? I see this happen day in and day out, although a little less since some boats have started to use small circles
you guys blew this way out of proportion and accused me of anything and everything to get the blame off yourselves and onto me.I think the point has already been made and you learned a few lessons so what still the big deal?If no one would have opened there mouth than you and anyone else would still be pulling fish out of the water. This is a dead subject and i was shockedd no one cared as they did and pretty much redirected the blame onto me for pointing out my concerns and than went on to gut hooked fish to anything and everything that had nothing to do with the point i was trying to make.
Linda, that took a lot of courage to come forward. Glad you did and nice to hear the "other side of the story"
Yes Linda, thanks! The desperate one could have sent you a pm (I'm quite certain you would have openly responded as you did here). The desperate one then could have started his own thread on the rulz, morals and such but hey, that wouldn't have given him the chance to rip on fellow fishing folk (again). That second fish had to have been epic from a yak; congrats!!
yes that 2nd sail was amazing! I can see how people become addicted to billfishing. After catching Kings, spanish & flounder today I was ho hum... I may have to move somewhere else to feed my addiction...lol

Dang, congratulations there Linda on a couple of really once-in-a-lifetime catches! Not too many people can say they've caught multiple sailfish out of a kayak, much less one that hasn't been towed offshore by a larger boat. You did this on your own and should be congratulated on a job well done, not bashed by...well let's just say "adjectives deleted."
Yeah, the kid KILLED A LEGAL FISH. It was a once in a life time opportunity for a kid. He probably does not have a 80 ft Bertram like you rich frat boys who feel like you make the fishing world a better place by releasing a sail. THE FISH WAS REPORTED DEAD BEFORE THEY GAFFED HIM.

Welcome in the virtual life where we always need someone to point the finger at to feel better about ourselves.
I am sure that if most people would meet each other and have a face to face contact, they would keep a much lower profile and could even be good friends

Well I wouldn't go that far....it would be hard to be friends with someone that you had never met and bashed you for the pure pleasure of it. But on another note I have met a ton of people through fishing forums that I otherwise never would had the pleasure of meeting. Some real standup guys with a wealth of fishing knowledge.
I come over from pensacola fishing forum and sometimes frequent this site mostly just reading.I wanted to maybe get some opinions and ask some of the guys from a different area about what they thought.2 sailfish have been killed off pensacola pier in 2 days. This pier is 30 feet off the water.standing height would put your eyes at 36 feet from the fish. Now the only measuring device being used to kill these sailfish is hillbilly with a gaff standing back squinting at the fish and saying i think its legal.yEAH ITS LEGAL LETS KILL IT.We have a had a great run on sails this year and they have been landed from kayaks(pulledout of the water for 10 minute photo shoots ,and seems like pier fisherman are pretty eager to kill these fish.Is this right to gaff these fish being in doubt on the correct size.I have been bashed to no end ,called a whiner, cry baby blah blah blah but this really does concern me.Wouldliketo see what other guys might have bto say.I have already spoke with NOAA official and he was pretty upset to hear what was taking place. If they could measure the fish more accurately it would not bother me as bad but it does. The killing of a sail or any billfish is pretty pitiful but thess guys have a kill em all attitude and it makes me sick.here is a picture of 1 sail caught by kids.
yeah, that's shitty for sure..but keeping them out of the water for "10 min. photoshoots" probably doesn't help their chances for survival either..
One thing that is being missed here is that NOAA requires anyone targeting sailfish to have a HMS (highly migratory species) permit. Impossible to get fishing from a pier because you register the vessel. Not sure on a kayak.

it is my understanding that a HMS is only needed in federal waters....
yep...you're right. Except unless you want to keep a tuna caught in state waters:
"Vessel owners/operators who recreationally fish for or retain regulated Atlantic tunas (bluefin, yellowfin, bigeye, albacore, and skipjack), sharks, swordfish, and billfish in Atlantic Federal waters, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, must obtain an HMS Angling category permit or a HMS Charter/Headboat permit. However, General category vessels may fish recreationally for HMS so long as they are participating in a registered recreational HMS tournament and fishing under tournament rules. Vessels fishing exclusively in state waters are required to obtain the HMS Angling permit if they wish to keep their regulated tunas (bluefin, yellowfin, bigeye, skipjack, and albacore). Vessel owners/operators should check their state regulations regarding the retention of sharks, swordfish, and/or billfish in state waters. "
