I'd much prefer to see penn sell a quality reel in the $100-150 range like all the other manufactures do

Thats the same reel that they are trying to sell to the surf fishing market. They need to realize that they can't build one reel to cover both markets as they are vastly different.

Default Penn Conquer

As a Penn Pro Staffer on the "left coast", I have not yet gotten my hands on a Torque Spinner yet.
However, I have been using the new Penn Conquer 7000 spin reel since ICAST [July], which will sell for around $220, and is intended as the next step up from the Penn Slammer spinners [$150-$170].
I have caught numerous fish on it without a hitch [50 lb. braid], lots of pargo, cabrilla, etc, along with several albacore in the 35-40 pound class, a 42-pound yellowfin tuna, and had a striped marlin hooked for about a minute [hook pulled].
Reel has a total of 9 drag washers [4 metal, 5 HT100] that are about silver-dollar size, with 32 pounds max drag listed [I used about 13-16 pounds], appears to be a very good choice for the price.

Default Production

Redweiser,
The Penn Torque spinners will absolutely be "Made in USA".
The Conquers will be made offshore, as are all spinners in that price category.
I have a 10-day San Diego long-range trip aboard the American Angler departing on October 15, and hope to have a Torque Spinner to try on some of the larger-grade yellowfin tuna, wahoo, and yellowtail.

How much drag/ line capacity are we looking at with this reel?

Default Penn website

Apologies if this site does not allow commercial links, but it's just Penn's main site.

Tunanorth,

I Just got my hands on a Conquer 7000.
I haven't fished it yet but was very impressed with it straight out of the box.
It will be field tested against a big cobia very soon.

Thats a nice spinner. It looks very similar to the van staal's. I would imagine that if somebody buys the reel listed on eBay, they would get a reel without any warranty.

I'm very curious about the new Penn Torque spinning reel. It's priced about $250 less than the Shimano Stella, but about $300 more than the Shimano Saragosa. I real tweener reel.

Curious about the drag etc....FWIW, I believe reel manufacturers measure spinner drags at the bottom of the spool, not top.

This is what is suppose to qualify Penn in the jigging/ popping world. A reliable resource from this years icast claim this reel rated PG (pure garbage). The body looks like nothing more than an older model gold plated Penn SS. One spinner I am looking forward to circulating is the Saltist.
