Default tyrnos-torium-tld

hey THT. i had a few questions for you guys, ive been reading as much as i can about these reels but still find myself questioning what i want. i am only 19, i have an small Proline and mostly go for kings. now i know the TLDs work great, that is my fallback reel. im looking to get two at the moment and cant decided between the torium 30 or tyrnos 16- i can get either of those fairly cheap. i will be fishing mostly kings, but woiuld like the option to pull in grouper, whaoo, maybe some dolphin, small sharks etc. ive heard about the torium AR breaking down but also heard of ppl using them for years. anyway, i was just wondering what you guys thought between the TYR 16 and the TOR 30. thanks in advance guys

If you like or are interested in the Torium 30, I would suggest the Daiwa Saltist! Same price point (very similar reel) but the Saltist is ALL METAL construction... I have the Saltist 50. Same $$ as the Torium more line cap and more max drag. The TLDs are always a winner.

thanks for the reply
i was looking at those as well...however since the tyrnos are 60 cheaper and those are what i really like i may just go with those, they seem well rounded, not that the daiwas are not. i may try the two tyrnos then get iether the toriums or saltists next..we will see. but everyone else feel free to post your opinion, and thanks again Reel-Life

just got word today from tackle shop. said torium is basically fried, despite regular maintenance. get a saltist or something else.

All three are good reels.

The Tyrnos has a rebate on them from Shimano -- that's an indicator that they want to clear out stock. I have a very strong suspicion that Shimano will debut a new small metal framed lever drag reel at ICAST in two weeks. What I'm telling you is that there are going to be some killer deals out there on Tyrnos reels.

The Torium is an excellent reel as well - just a star drag. For bottom fishing, that is preferrable IMO. The problem with the ARB failing usually occurs when livebait fishing for large fish who "hit on the go", like tuna. Guys freeline the live bait and when the fish hits, throw the reel into gear, engaging the drag. When you have 65lbs braid on a Torium/Trinidad/Saltist with the drag at 15lbs or more; and you'll get failures.

The TLD is good solid reel for many purposes -- but it's weakest at bottom fishing. Oh, it'll work just fine, it's just not as good for grouper/AJs as it its for Sailfish/Kingfish/... and general trolling.

For the $$, I'd get that Tyrnos 16, spool it 50 or 65lbs braid and a 50-100yds mono topshot. It's metal framed (stronger than a TLD), topless (great for drifting livebait back in the spread), and a smooth drag.

"Reel Life" hit the nail right on the head!

The Daiwa Saltist 40H is identical in price to the Torium 30.
I have two (2) of them paired on Trevala 5'8" XXH.

They work great for bass...bottom fishing deep water is nice on the jig retrieve, but the 6.2:1 ratio in my opinion is too high for the large bottom fish at deep depths.

Tuna fishing (jigging): Ihaven't taxed the reel out yet but heard favorable reviews about guys that have on fish to 200#.

thanks for the info skipper, thats what i had been hearing

that what i was kind of leaning towards Prop Blast. ill keep my eyes open on here for some TYR 20s but ill get the 16s if all else fails. it seems liek a well rounded reel that can handle a good bit. thanks for the advice a lot

Irishjig, the daiwa and TLD are kind of my fall back reels, i realize the saltist are good reals, but im kind of partial to shimanos used many shimano baitcasters and loved them, but thanks a lot for the reply

i have 4 tyrnos reels and 1 saltist 50T....i use the saltist for bottom fishing and the Tyrnos for trolling/standup. You can find a Saltist 50T for about $150 on ebay. The Saltist H dont have the torque of the T.
