Reel Horror Stories

I was watching this on youtube and was wondering if anyone else had any stories of a reel malfunctioning. If so what type and what conditions. I know that any company an make a bad reel just wanted to see if any had similiar experienes. This looks like a tld (not shure) and the base breaks at the end of the clip.

A buddy of mine bought a bunch of them because they were lighter then my Penns. Graphite yea right. .Not on my boat

That is a fairly common failure with graphite reels. Keeping it in the harness likely prevented it form happening earlier as it balances the torque on the plate. I'm not a fan of the bigger graphite reels, with one exception - I have a buddy that uses a TLD-30II to fish for tuna with 20 lb IGFA mono (also a TLD-20II to fish IGFA 16 lb mono) - he likes because it is so much lighter than an aluminum Penn or Shimano 30 while holding the same 1000 yards of line; and with 6 lbs of drag he fishes, I doubt the reel seat will ever fail. For those of us that take our 50W's and put 80 lb mono, fishing 20+ lbs of drag, I would not use anything but a quality aluminum reel.

I thought about the TLD 50's and ended up with Penn Internationals. I do have some smaller TLD's (20's and 25's) and love them for smaller fish. So far they are 10 years old, never been taken apart and keep tickin. knock on wood.

I love my tlds 25 and 30s but I would have definetly used my Penn 50 wides for that fish.

similar thing happened on a show on ESPN Outdoors a couple years ago.....it was a tournament in south florida or the keys and the TLD broke, and he cursed Shimano on TV saying Shimano cost him $250K. But he shouldnt have been fishing for such big fish with a graphite reel.
