That is a fairly common failure with graphite reels. Keeping it in the harness likely prevented it form happening earlier as it balances the torque on the plate. I'm not a fan of the bigger graphite reels, with one exception - I have a buddy that uses a TLD-30II to fish for tuna with 20 lb IGFA mono (also a TLD-20II to fish IGFA 16 lb mono) - he likes because it is so much lighter than an aluminum Penn or Shimano 30 while holding the same 1000 yards of line; and with 6 lbs of drag he fishes, I doubt the reel seat will ever fail. For those of us that take our 50W's and put 80 lb mono, fishing 20+ lbs of drag, I would not use anything but a quality aluminum reel.
