What can I do to get an Avet HX5/2, that I bought 18 months ago, to perform like it was new ?
I have 9 Shimano Tiagras and Tyrnos, some are more than 5 years old, that have a very smooth dragand never got serviced.Keeping my reels clean and slightly lubricated, was enough.
Now the only Avet I have, the drag became more and more jerky. I like this lightweight and do not care about the tiny, hard to switch clicker button. But the lack of smooth drag (compared to the Shimanos) is annoying.
Perhaps there is an easy fix for the problem ?
hare2.......Send it back to the company. For $25 to cover shipping and handling they will fix the drag, clean and inspect the reel and repair anything else that may be wrong with it. Do not lubricate the drags. They are designed to operate dry. Call them to make arrangements. When I sent my LX 6/3's in (after 40 - 50 marlin, an equal number of sails, and many yellowtail, dorado, yellowfin and wahoo) They turned them around in about two days and sent them back like new.
Ken......That is an interesting post by the Avet rep. The most significant part the conclusion of the test:
"Avet’s stance at this point: They are going to hold on to their original direction of NO grease due to inconsistencies resulting from varying temperatures, having to reapply grease periodically, grease having a tendency of attracting inherent elements such as salt, carbon dust etc."
When Harry was in Loreto this summer for a tournament I asked him this question directly and he said the same. Last year when I called the company to arrange for the return of my LX 6/3's, the first question asked by the woman who answered the phone was whether I had applied grease to the drags. My response was, "No", and arrangements for the return were completed. We did not get to it since I had not applied the grease, but my impression was that if my answer had been different they may not have been so anxious to do the free repair.
Alan.......I think that I contacted you last year before I returned my reels to Avet, but I'm not sure. Is your advice to follow Avet's instructions and not grease the drags?
no. avet has maintained this stance since the beginning. and in the beginning, there were many that had doubts about carbon fiber and teflon grease. you will recall that i took alot of flak for that, way back when. now, almost ever major reel manufacturer is on board. avet is the one last company that does not use a greased carbon fiber drag washer. i believe that their stance, their refusal, has resulted in extensive damage to many of their reels. the exact number will never be known, but i'm sure the financial cost to avet, and the damage to their reputation, has been tremendous. initially, i tried to reason with them, but no more. to my mind, they have proven themselves to be unreasonable.
sometime within the next year, i am going to start my own website. i will continue to post rebuilt tutorials and respond to questions, but i need someplace where i can post things and keep them updated as i learn and change. believe me, avet will be featured prominently. their name does start with an "a," after all.

That is interesting. I'm sure that you plan to, Alan, but please post prominently on this forum and elsewhere when you do unveil your own website. I recently bought a pair of the new dual drag 3.0 - 2 Avets. I hope that this issue will be resolved before it comes time to have them serviced.
don't worry, i will never abandon tht.com. the exchanges here have been been more helpful to me than you will ever know. i owe all of you a great deal. alan
