Anyone ever heard of these Polaris reels:

What do you think?

Yup. Made in China by the same company supplying Zelina under the name Tailwalker or Maguro. Research Zelina Tailwalker under google and you will understand why no one likes them. I have a review of the 80 Zelina somewhere. All I can say is.... check out the reviews.

It is essentially mechanically identical to the Shimano Tiagra. Even the schematic is copied.

Hmmm ... very conflicting. The tiagra is the best big game reel made if you ask me. IF it mechanically identical why would it be a bad reel?

The chinese tried to model it after the Tiagra which Alan Tani kindly described in his tutorial. Only problem is...ITS MADE IN CHINA... which means be very careful. Bearings are p.o.s. The drag is this rubber like compound that sticks on the first fish. The tolerance levels are poorly engineered in as things wobble and break. But most importantly look at the reel seat. My friend's 80 had a 50 foot that would not go on an 80lb class butt. Hahahaha, I just noticed it says made in the U.S.A. on the box. What a f'ing joke! They'll do whatever it takes to try and sell the product.

If thats' true, there has to be some law against that. Everything I buy I look to see where it's made & refuse to buy Chinese crap. I would truly be pi $$ed if I bought it & found out otherwise.
Maybe the box is made in USA! - a holes

If it's identical mechanically to the Tiagra, I see little reason to switch - might as well stay with the Tiagra's

buddy got some of those reels in the 50 class size and he had nothing but problems with them. They are crap, handles feel off while driving, drags heat up and fail, and you can tell the material is chincy- typical chinese crap. Go for it though- when you get a big giant and it starts peeling line and the reel blows up you wont be to happy
