Default A Non-Fishing Wife and Fishing Rods and Reels - - - My Gold Jewelry

This is a true story . . . names of fishing buddies withheld for their sakes

I was fishing with friends not too long ago and we had the boat and gear in his yard and were washing everything down as the others were cleaning and packing the fish.

One of the guy's wife came up to me and looked on as I washed my set of five Shimano 50s (gold) on black rods with gold coloured wrapping and gold coloured rollers (they look really sharp). The conversation goes something like this, though I don't remember the exact words:

Lady: "Geez Gus, that is an expensive set of rods and reels" . . . translation . . . you spent a lot of money on those rods

Gus: "Yup, that is my jewelry, my gold jewelry"

Lady: "What do you mean by 'your gold jewelry'?" . . . translation . . . what kind of BS story is that

Gus: "My wife loves jewelry, she has some nice jewelry in gold, and though she could wear a different piece of jewelry every day of the month, she still loves to get a new piece of jewelry now and then, and I don't argue with her."

Lady: Hmmmmm . . . translation . . . "What does your wife's jewelry have to do with fishing rods"

Gus: "Think of it this way. My rods and reels are my gold jewelry. You don't think my gold jewelry is either practical or maybe even needed. I really love my gold jewelry. I really want my gold jewelry. And I have more gold jewelry at home that I could have brought with me today, but what you see is what we needed for today's fishing."

- - - - - - - - - -

This is the same logic that I use with my wife. Cecile is a great sport and she acknowledged that my logic about my gold jewelry (rods and reels) probably made as much sense to me as her gold jewelry (rings, necklaces and pendent's etc.) make to her.

PS When I buy myself gold jewelry of the fishing kind, Cecile also gets a nice piece of jewelry, jewelry of 'her kind.'

We both like our gold jewelry

- - - - - - - -

PS This logic is hard to use when you own that certain brand of boats where the guys wear multiple gold chains

With the wife fishing with me,I went out and got her own set of gold and had them blue printed and balanced for her with custom rods built for her, sweet.Penn 30WII.They came out so nice that I love to use them and she will not let me.Guess I will have to get another set for myself one day.

Sweet. For some reason that sounds familiar. As long as there is a little wrapped up box for her next to the new reels in the garage, all is good.

prockvon

Cecile does not fish . . . health issues

Contender23

Yup, but I prefer not to link the jewelry directly to buying fishing gear . . . I prefer the surprise approach saying "Dear, I though you deserved this little gift"

That is what works in our home . . . after 37 years of marriage she seems quite happy with this approach

Yeah, that may be the smarter approach. Only at about 4 years of marriage and 10 or so of living together, I still have much to learn.

The only good part is that I think that I have finally overloaded the garage with enough fishing stuff that she has a hard time telling the new stuff from the old.

I think I may have heard this conversation and I have an anniversary coming up in a couple of weeks. Time to go shopping!

Auguste:

I have to agree, we're 33 years of marriage and the logic is the same as mine, the Admiral agrees......it's going to cost me really big next year...she already informed me...

I may cost you 'big' but after 33 years I am sure your Admiral is worth it.

Just place your new fishing 'toys' next to her new clothing purchases in the closet and dare her to say anything about it. Yeah, I'm talking tough right now but I still hide my purchases because she really doesn't seem to have any hobbies or reckless purchases (other than the house we're restoring - and that's another story ).

I have fished with Gus and can definately attest to his "gold jewelry".

Those Chaos rods are fantastic, and I attribute those rods to the high numbers of caught fish as opposed to breakoffs, with strike drag and line count as other factors. Those are the rods that I will buy in the future and rig them almost the same for my future tuna fishing. I still think wind on's would be the ticket on a smaller boat Gus, as you are investigating.

Plus they look like I know what I'm doing out there, being trolled behind the boat. Just classy rods and reels all around.

Now I just have to convince the Admiral of it, or maybe buy some more presents, or better yet, have her fight a Tuna on one so she can feel the difference!

BTW, Lisa would have joined us fishing had she not been at work. She let me have the day off for my birthday, as my present.

She was just in Marvel of the excellent rods and reels, as I had previously mentioned them before the trip! I was excited to have such nice tackle and experience aboard, it taught me alot.
