Glenn,
Way to go!! we are getting ready to head to the outerbanks within the next couple of weeks to try and do some damage . What a great day glad to see you made it out. Love to hear them screem. Are you guys heading south anytime soon?..........Mark
Tuna.....yea.....how are the longfin for eating? Better, worse, or same as YFT?
It all depends on what you like..I actually like long fin, but most prefer yellows. The longfin is a white fish. Long fin doesn't make great sushi...but then there's big eye, you would think you died and went to heaven!
Always good to see blood on the deck. What were you using, i.e., the daisy chains? We use those too here in Central Florida but I have been converted to Braid Speedsters. Those lures are the sickest YFT catchers I have ever seen.
Green was the color of the day. We had an 11 line spread going. Two green squid spreader bars with GM trailers, the rest of the lures from the flat lines, short and long riggers and bridge poles were med to Select size ballyhoo with either sea witches or Sea Star Illanders and regular Ilanders (Green/white, Black/blue and Blue/White). That pink chain you see did not get touched...I put it out there after we broke off something else.
We thought about a braid plug but anything under the water would attract WAY too much grass...it was broken but very thick...
I think we went through 4 packs of ballyhoo...maybe 5. I know the 3 of us in the pit rigged a ton of baits that day.
how far out do you run from va beach to get to these fishing grounds? i have family up there and have never thought of trailering the boat up there to go after the tuna. i wait patiently for them to show up down here in charleston.
Depends on time of year but anywhere from 40-65 miles depending on when and what you want to target. Bluefins in the spring/early summer are usually 35-45 miles out, yellowfins 45-65 miles in Spring and again in Fall. Yellowfins slow down during the heat of the summer.
i saw a post on another fishing website down here and it showed some nice catches of YFT the last few days in OBX. so if one were to go up sometime in the next 2 weeks, look to go about 55-60 miles out it sounds like.
