thanks bull for the link....nice mahi's
i've not caught one in my life so far...apparently they are not to be seen in the areas i fish... i've seen dvd's of catching them and they seem to be mighty good fighters and goo in aerial action....
fishing for them in kayaks must be heaps of fun it always is when the risk factor is on the high sides

That's awesome! I've just started kayak fishing myself, and I can't imagine catching a 60 lb dolphin from a kayak.... Very cool pictures...

A dorado is always a tough fish to gaff, unless he is some diastance away from you horizontally to better see his tall thin profile. Doing it close straight down, with your legs hanging in the water with a short handled gaff and then control his wild action after he is gaffed on a kayak would be really nuts, especially a fish over 40 lbs.

Most guys who catch big fish from kayaks just take their time and let the fish tow them around 'til they're just about dead... That being said, it would still be exhilirating to gaff even a 1/2 dead 60 lb dolphin from a kayak! I caught a schoolie from a kayak and was thrilled...

I did not see anything that said the guy gaffed the Phin from the kayak.

There are some nice fish being caught there

There is a group of 10 guys on kayaks fishing out of Mission Bay in San Diego. All of them got dorado as the warm temps are driving them north into California waters. Hell, they will be in Seattle buy September.

All of these boys are using 2-3' gaffs. Nets are to bulky on a yak. Imagine trying to paddle in a headwid with a net acting like a sail.

You're right, it doesn't say it specifically. But he's on the kayak holding the fish with a gaff in its head... I can't imagine how else it was done.........

Yeah, we've been hoodwinked before. Where's his paddle?

Oh, to answer your question: It could have been gaffed by another boat and handed 'back' to the angler.

Lol... Ok... Maybe I'm just a little more trusting... How long 'til someone claims the pictures are photoshopped now?

I've seen guys land 100 lb sharks from kayaks, so gaffing a dolphin (which wear out relatively quickly) from a yak is challenging, and awesome, but not impossible.... I have no idea who the guy is or what he story is, but I just can't help but laugh about doubting the picture for no reason at all... Oh well....

I’m not doubting the picture. I’m just not reading into the picture as you might be.

Have you ever sunk a gaff into a 50 pound Phin? I doubt your shirt will stay lily white. Oh, and they don’t tire relatively quickly. If it seems so, I would imagine time is just flying by.

Hay, either way, it’s a great fish and my hat’s off to him.

I don't know if you can see the shots on this forum without registering, but here are more photos of 2 yakers fighting and gaffing 6 dodo's, to those who doubt.

Of course this was the same guy who catches and gaffs makos and threshers from his yak, so I guess a few 20 lb dorados would seem pretty tame after that.

There are 5 or 6 other threads of the same kind of action if you're interested.
