There is no consistent industry standard to hook sizing that I'm aware of. Hook sizes vary from company to company and even between hook styles offered by one manufacturer. Makes no sense to me!

circle hooks are sized weird, a mustad commercial 11/0 looks like a 5/0 j hook. then, there are comm. circles and recreational circles. don't bother trying to figure it out . just use what works/looks right.
AFAIK, hook size relates to the size of the gap of the hook. According to http://www.wildlife.state.nh.us/Fish...s_brochure.pdf there are no standards on sizing circle hooks, so I guess it's a bit if a trial and error if you're buying online, for instance.
