Captain Delabar and myself spent the last three days on board the "FINATIC". Our clients were from Oklahoma and those boys know how to cook and eat. We talked trash and promised them a trip of a lifetime and now we had to deliver. We took them out to the promised land in style and it delivered as usual. We started out catching bait on some of the midway rigs. All of the hard tails were large so we moved out to find some grass patches and some small baits. We hit the mother load on a grass patch about 25 miles off of Southwest Pass. We quickly filled the live well using #6 Frenzy Sabiki Rigs. From there we pointed the big boat south and headed to Green Canyon. On the way out we held the traditional skeet shooting contest off the back deck. I do not remember who won because Chef Tony showed up with a quail, bacon and onion kabob hot off the grill. He finished us off with some filet minion for dinner. About the time I was ready for a nap it was time to fish. We started out at Marco Polo and the fish were busting everywhere. Our excitement was short lived as we were told to leave and give two miles clearance for divers in the water. Disappointed, we motored south to Mad Dog. Once there we attacked with live bait, chum, Angry Poppers and Ballistic Flying Fish. The night was not as productive as usual but we ended with 6 yellowfin in the #50 to #80 range and about 20 blackfin. We started out the morning trolling with a nice 10 line spread. We picked up several small tuna and a couple of nice dolphin when the man showed up. While we were clearing a line, a nice Blue Marlin streaked through the spread and hammered the starboard rigger bait. Captain Shane was on his game as he waited for the fish to take the bait and then brought the diesels to life to set the hook. I grabbed the rod started reeling and once the slack was out of the line I gave it two firm hook sets. The fish then began tail walking and putting on a spectacular show. I handed the rod to the angler and he settled into the fight. After about an hour and a half battle, Captain Delabar leadered the fish for a photo op and a nice release. The fish was estimated at around #350. After the celebration was over we dropped out some live baits and put 6 more Yellow Fin in the cooler. We were using the 6/0 and 7/0 Frenzy Ocean Camo blue circle hooks for live baiting and the 5/0 for chunking. If you see larger fish show up in your slick, jump up to the 7/0. The fish were not too shy so we were using #80 mono straight to the hook. If you see fish turning away from your chunk, drop down to #60 fluoro. On the way to our next destination we came across a #500 Mako Shark. We tossed a bait to him and he took it but quickly cut the #400 mono leader. We were frantically trying to rig up a leader that would land this beast but were lacking some heavy wire or cable. We doubled up some #150 wire and tossed him another bait. He took it but the fight only lasted a few minutes before he destroyed the wire. He disappeared and we figured it was his day to live. We were able to get some incredible video of the fish and I will have it up on the website next week. We then motored to some other floaters and Chef Tony showed up with some New York Strip. After another first class meal, the top water tuna action exploded. We were serving up face full of treble courtesy of the Angry Popper. The trick is to wait for a flying fish to take flight. Once he is airborne, cast the popper in front of the flyer where you think he will land. The pursuing tuna will mistake your popper for the flyer he was chasing and its game on. This is also the perfect time to drift the Ballistic Flying Fish. Because it floats, you can just let it drift behind the boat. Keep the boat on the up current side and drift the flyer under the lights or the flare. You will not have to wait long. Don't forget to add a stinger to maximize you hookup ratio.
http://www.frenzytackle.com/tips.htm. We were using Chaos spinning rods with #80 Jery Brown spectra on a Spheros 1400. This is a deadly combo that was set up for us by Reel Pro Shop. It was about 2AM and every one was exhausted. We retired for the evening and as the sun was breaking the horizon, we put out the spread and started trolling. We picked up some small tunas but that was about it. As we headed north, Captain Buddy spotted what he first thought was another Mako Shark. Much to our surprise it was a #500 Swordfish sunning himself. He submerged before we could get a bait in front of him. Overall it was another incredible trip. Tony and his group are first class people, anglers, and cooks. I am already looking forward to our next trip. Captain Delabar is back at it again today in the Twin Vee. I will have a report from him later tonight.
