Default Montauk Sportfishing Report 6/19/06

One down and three to go - shark tournaments that is. The Star Island Tournament is always the biggest with around
250 boats competing and it’s a good thing there were a lot of boats, otherwise all the tourists would have been pretty
bored. There weren’t a lot of fish brought in to be weighed. And if you are thinking about heading out to catch a shark or
two, don’t scrimp on the fuel. Inside of thirty miles or so you stand a decent chance of not catching anything.
The results are as follows;
Heaviest Shark Overall - 399 lbs Thresher - TEAM S I YACHTS
1st Place Mako - 247 lbs - PRIME TIME
2nd Place Mako - 219 lbs - COMPASS ROSE
3rd Place Mako - 184 lbs RED HEAD
1st Place Blueshark - 260 lbs - TUNA TAILES
2nd Place Blueshark - 242bs - RED HEAD
3rd Place Blueshark - 240 lbs - STACEY JANE
1st Place Other - 399 lbs Thresher - TEAM S I YACHTS
2nd Place Other - 266 lbs Thresher - SHORT CIRCUIT
3rd Place Other - 239 lbs Thresher - SEA BISCUIT

I finally got out to fish this week (The owner of the boat that I run never gets here until mid June). The idea was to go
out and catch fluke, but I wasn’t too optimistic about doing good. However, in two hours drifting in the Midway Rips,
we limited out with fish to around twenty-three inches, with about a dozen or so throwbacks. But, based on the radio,
that wasn’t typica, so I guess I just got a case of dumb-ass luck. So, next we decided to try for some seabass, so we ran
out to Rocky Hill, and on the first drop caught a nice two pounder, followed in rapid succession by a half dozen or so
doggies, before we bailed out.

It seems like the school bluefins are starting to show up already. Fluke boats fishing on the south side have been seeing
them pop up on occasion.
