Default Pflueger reels ?

I saw that Pflueger has a new high speed reel targeting the King Mac crowd. It looks O.K. for fun fishing, does anyone have any info. I think it is the Contender G50HS. They also have a lever drag that is similar in size to the TLD 25

Default RE: Pflueger reels ?

I have about 5 Pflueger reels I believe. Bought them as less expensive alternatives to some of my (Approx equal to) Penn 4500 and 5500's. I got a Trion and a President, both holding up well mechanically, but are showing corrosion worse than some of my 10 year old Penn's. I also bought a G30L Combo package and for the money I guess it's OK, nothing spectacular, seems weak and honestly, I have already retired it because I feel as though it would break, very cheap version of say a TLD-25 ( not even same class). I also picked up two Pflueger Contender G50HS reels for trolling, they have done well so far, I think I have used them 2 times each, but again, they hold not even a shadow to my Various Penn's. Heck, If you were interested, I'd sell both Pflueger G50HS Reels for $50.00, no line on them, no boxes, do have the manuals.

If you are on a budget, I'd say that Pflueger is a way to go, but if you can afford better, I would, if your a tournament fisherman, well, the answer is obvious.

Final note: If your a big Pflueger fan and you have caught 500 lb grouper with your reel, Great!, I'm not bashing the reel, just giving my honest opinion on this class of tackle.

mechanically they are fine. they corrode bad though. they must scimp on the coatings in order to lower the prices.

I have a Pflueger Oceanic that my cousin bought for me when I was about 12. I'll be 68 in a few months, and I still have it, AND it still works fine (but I'd like to get some new ball bearings for it). Awesome.

I have one of the 50GS on a light weight rod, and is fun with small fish on it. The drag is a little sticky and not terribly reliable IMHO. I like it for fun, but if you had a fish on the line for money, you would want something a little better. I almost bought the 50 lever drag, but the drag was again sticky and not even in the same class as the TLD.
