Default new rods/reels for bottom fishing

I'm going to break down and try some bottom fishing, 200feet of water or less.Looking for advice on rods and reels. a friend uses Daiwa brute-buster 6ft rods w/ Daiwa star drag reels. What about the new Shimano torium style reels? Or just stick with Penn Senators (6/0?) What kind of rods do you'all like? Thanks

Avet SX, JX, or the Shimano Toriums are great solid reels for the money. Lamiglass Tri-flex 6530 or 7030 are awesome matches

bottom fishing for what? I do tons of cod jiggin'. anywhere from 50-300 ft. I love the daiwa sealines 400- 450- 600. Smooth and tough as nails. also, can be found cheap on ebay. I like using stand up rods for the mechanical advantage they afford,(I catch alot of big fish). my favorites are the all star "gulf stream" and a daiwa "interline" (the one that the line goes through the blank) that I tied guides onto.I hated it untill I tied on guides, now it's my favorite. There are a bunch of standup rods that would suit this purpose well ,if you decided to go this route. any of the 50-130 rods (maybe even lighter, manufacturers differ) should do fine. There's also a boat rod made by ugly stick that I'm pretty fond of .it's about 6' and I think rated something like 40-80. good luck

We use 30-50 or 30-80 stand ups 5'6"to 6' and 113's or 114's.....also use some TLD 25's If you stick with Senators its easy to add electric reel motors later....and if you bottom fish much, you will.

agree with greg about the electrics, have two "elec-tra-mates" and a "reel quick"they're awesome for certain things ( 300 ft. of water, haddock fishing for example) elec-tra-mate also sells one rigged for the daiwa 400+600
