Hi
I'm tired of the winters and am considering relocating to FL. The area would probably be in the Orlando area. What type of fishing opportunities are nearby. I know there is freshwater bassin but I also have interest in some of the coastal fisheries. Would a bay boat work OK for bass? Are there any FL. fishing websites? Looking forward to any responses.
I live in the Orlando area and find it a great area to fish from. You are right in the middle of the state so you can fish out of Crystal River one weekend and Port Canaveral the next. A bay boat would be fine for fishing for bass in central FL and still let you fish the coasts for just about anythign else too. Depends on what your primary focus is going to be though will determine your boat. If you think you would want to run offshore sometime, I would also consider a boat with a good high freeboard. Good Luck.
Thanks for the replies. I'll check out the web sites.
Fortunately my work allows me to relocate where ever I chose. Orlando is not written in stone but after the hurricanes the last 2 years, I can't get my family to consider the coastal areas.
I'm thinking inland bassing in the winter and inshore/near shore coastal fishing during the summer. This is where I need the input.
Sorry Spear, please don't take this personally. Don't move to Orlando. Move somewhere on the coast. Unless, you love Mickey Mouse and traffic. I travel all over the state and live in Jax and Orlando is my least favorite place. Truly despise it. Nothing to do with the people but Disney and tourism and traffic, etc. I cringe thinking about it.
A bay boat will work for the many bass lakes, but it will not work for the offshore stuff. You will need to have a CC or other deeper water boat to fish either coast. For example, you could fish the beach at Port Canaveral for cobia, kings, and triple tail, but bottom fishing and trolling are 15-35 miles out. You will be able to figure out your preference after you get here. Just don't buy a new boat until you know what you want to do. If you have a bay boat now, you can run that yourself and do an occasional charter for the deeper stuff.

My thoughts exactly. I also travel the whole state and Orlando is a PITA most of the time. Maybe look at Lakeland, Ocala, Clermont if you can live anywhere but not near the coast.
Once again, my thanks for the input. Especially the opinions about Orlando. My preference would be to locate close to Lake Toho or some other larger lake.
I currently have a 2004 Pursuit CC. It is rigged for fishing the salt in the Pacific NW. It's a nice boat but a little large and heavy for the towing and launching by myself. And a lot of the rigging done for fishing in the NW would have to come off a be done again for the local waters. I'm thinking a smaller bay boat (20-22'?) would be easier to deal with. Hopefully it would allow inland bass fishing and some bay/in shore salt fishing. Both of the type of fisheries would maybe be something I could at least start by myself.
Lake Toho=Kissimmee. Prepare to speak Spanish as the local language and get a low rider to fit in. Sorry for all the negatives, take a look at these areas before making a decision. Good Luck.
Jags,
I don't blame you and definately don't take it personally. I don't care for Orlando either. I live in lake county where old people go to die (lots of retirement communities). I was just saying that central FL itself is a nice place to live. I was assuming he was refering to the area not the city. Any big city is going to have traffic, but the I-4 area is horrible. There are a lot of options for central fl ranging from city life in orlando to country life in Sumter county. The place I hate the most in FL is Miami, don't even get me started on that. Anyways, good luck house hunting. Prices have started to slip a little but not as much as other areas of the country.
I won't tell my family about the huricane hitting the orlando area. Otherwise I'll be spending more cold wet winters here in the Pacific NW. The government is talking about closing the entire salmon season in the ocean. No fishing
I think Jacksonville is one of the last old Florida towns and it is a nice place.... you should look at JAX for sure.... you do not want to live in Orlando... Pensacola is also a nice place.......
...and Kudos to you for being a trail blazer.... you are the first person to decide to move to FLorida because they are sick of cold weather.... make sure you pick up some jean shorts and a few gold chains.....so you can fit in and all....

Chris
I agree with the above 100%, Orlando is a nice city, with lots to do, but the tourists and traffic would keep me from ever living there.
I live in Jacksonville and we seem to fair pretty well with the storms, "knock on wood", if you are set on living mid state, I would look at some of the counties suurounding Orange.
As far as the boat goes, from you are describing you want it for, I think a bay boat would fit your needs. Good luck with your decision..
Well, I'll want to fit in... Could I just cut off my jeans? Sorry, no gold chains. Would stinging together a bunch of gold spoons and spinner blades work?
