Default Need advice (really good advice)

gentelmen & ladies,I have a beautiful Shimano calais CL200Mg-5 Reel that I use to use while fresh water fishing ,Ibought a boat last year and am now a L.I.sound fisherman.how much harm do you think I will do using this reel in salt water.Should I sell the reel or use it,oh also hooked this reel up with a G.loomis crank bait series rodCBR783 6'6" Med. Would this be a good set up for striped bass using plugs or is it to light.Any other advice on what it is good for will be higly appreciated Thank you very much.Rod labled 8-17 lbs thanks again

Salt corodes

Soap and water cleans

Wax protects

Are you diligent in cleaning and protecting your reels?

My reels are scratched, one is dingned but none are corroded

Saltwater requires more attention to cleaning, thats all . . . your choice

Also, periodically remove your reel from the rod and do a good cleaning of the seat and assembly

Ahhhhh the joys of fishing

Does your reel have the "ported" spool? Your setup sounds like it sure is sweet. I used to fish a lot of freshwater and would drool over the Calais and G-Loomis reels/rod combo often. I Calais is marketed as a freshwater reel. Not coastal or offshore. I think the rod would be fine. I would consider selling the reel and buying one of the new Calcutta's to put on the rod. You won't get quite the performance out of the Calcutta, but you will still have an outstanding combo for saltwater use. Actually, the Culcutta/G-Loomis combo will be at the top. In coastal Louisiana, that combo would be used for speckled trout and redfish. Not sure what application it would serve up where you are at.
