the grease gun can be packed with cal's but you have to do so by hand. it's a real pain. you'll need the cardboard tube from some other type of grease and clean it out first.
as for the bellevilles, see what kind of range you get with the stock configuration first. if you don't get the drag range you want, try changing the belleville configuration without the thrust washer. if the belleville stack is not "high" enough, look around locally for another belleville or let me know and i'll mail you one.

Alan, what about the bearing cover? I see you remove them with a pen, is there a better way? I kind of mangled mine. Or do you replace them each time?
Thanks,
Jim.

Great post!Makes me just want to jump right in and just do it!Guess I will next time I have time to do it!I have been sending them off for there cleaning,I will give it a try.If I have any problems,I guess I hope that you will put them back together if I ship them to you?
Thanks again Alan for a great post!
How about doing a breakdown on the 30VSW Penn Reel, mine has a frozen main bearing, but I can't figure how to dismantly the gears from the shaft to get at it.
Alantani, I know this is an old thread but I was wondering about the free spool. I see that you said the initial out of the box free spool on this reel was only a few seconds and then when you did your changes it was up to 30 sec. What causes this? Is it the altering of the shields? The belleville orientation change? If the shields are right out of the box aren't they most likely spinning well? Thanks for any input!
spooled up: Alan will be along to help, but the main reason it spins so much better is that when you remove the shields to the spool bearings, you also clean out all of the grease in the bearings and then lubricate with Corrosion X. The thick grease restricts free spinning of the bearings. Removing it and lubing with Corrosion X makes the bearings really spin.

yeeesshhh! keith, it's been months since i've opened up a 30vsw. i don't remember if the shift button retainer finally screwed off or popped off, but i do remember trying both. and i remember it was a real mess. if you get that far, taking the handle off is no problem. and then you have to drop out the gear stud. all of this just to get to the right main side plate bearing. and all of this just because someone probably greased one side of the bearing and not the other. let me see if i can find one locally again and take some pictures. alan

Alantani, your posts are awesome. I just followed your directions carefully and despite your detail and excellent pictures ended up with an extra thrust washer and a rattly 30T I think you and similarly talented reelheads have good job security so long as folks like me are around.
The guinea pig reel and his 7 buddies are going to a pro before the season begins!
Can we Sticky this post to the top of the thread in the Announcements section?? .... It has a lot more value to it than the "Signature guidelines" post.

I think IB should create a tutorial section where all of the valuable tutorials are displayed and saved. And all of Alan's tutorials should be in there as well as others like offshore 3144, phin, etc.
I have a lot of the tutorials saved in my IE Favorites, but a central section on THT would be nice.
