have about 5 days worth of vacation 2nd or 3rd week of feb to do a short vacation trip.
have never fished the gulf of mexico and have never been to la or texas. any recommendations on decent places to go?
the ideal place would be somewhere not that expensive, where we could charter a boat one day and fish by ourselves the other days, like surf or bridge fishing.
usually we go down to the keys, but we would like to try something different. originally was planning on going to the miami boat show, but now, i think i just wanna fish. all those lump reports look interesting.
Offshore is pretty "iffy" this time of year. And as for offshore, the further down the coast you go the better. You can go 40 miles out of Galveston and only be in 50 ft. of water. I fish out of Matagorda which is 80 south of Houston, and 40 miles out here is about 150 ft.
Bay fishing is good this time of year. The only thing to be caught in the surf is bull reds, but the fishing is slow. If you want I can try and give you some info for down here.
Grand Isle, LA would be a good place! Tuna fish on the famous Midnight Lump one day. Many boats to charter for about $1000-$1500 for a six pack charter. You can fish Grand Isle (bridges, beach and marsh), Fourchon (beach and marsh), Leeville (marsh) and Golden Meadow for speckled trout, redfish, sheephead and flounder. We have caught plenty of fish land locked in those areas. If you would like some more information email me: gmack7277@hotmail.com. I'm not a guide or anything, but I could tel you where to go and what not. Also the "camps" on the Island are priced pretty low. I know for sure you can stay at the "Kajun Sportsman" in Fourchon for about $80 a night.
Fishing out of Grand Isle is about the only place that might have rooms to stay thanks to Katrina. If you want, inshore fishing for redfish is HOT!Offshore, the wahoo bite is supper HOT and the yellowfin tuna is at its best being on the lump or heading out farther.First blue Marlin of the new year was taged about two weeks ago!
Check out my condo in Destin. You can fish off the beach and catch big redfish or spanish flounder short walk to jetties. I have a marina I catch trout and reds. If you want to bring a boat I can arrange for a slip. http://www.vrbo.com/51904
It has been quite a few years but I used to fish every Wed and Sun on or around Gaveston. The water is pretty cold this time of year. I used to skip wading/surf fishing until the water warmed up in March or April.
Plenty of guides are in the area for bay or offshore fishing and hotels are numerous and not expensive this time of year.
You might check a little farther south down the coast also.
Port O'Connor, Rockport and Corpus Christi/Padre Island will all have warmer water. Port O'connor is all about fishing and hunting and birding but I have spent a lot of time in and out of there plus fishing on nearby Matagorda Island (not Matagorda Bay).
Rockport and Corpus Christi have more nonfishing activities than Port O'connor and plenty of fishing options. They would probably be my choice but that's just me.
I would Google some guides and phone for info on what kind of fishing you might expect in Feb. Weather can vary a lot on the upper coast but less so the further south you go.
We spend a lot of time at Port O'Connor, but it's a fishing town. Not a lot to do other than fishing, birding, dolphin watching, etc. Nice place to stay is Poco Loco and they have a resident guide, Pickle, that can take care of any fishing and hunting that you want to do. Just don't stay in room 5, they supposedly don't let anyone stay there but us. Right!? Josie's has good Mexican food, Clark's is more upscale and Kathy's has all the shrimp you can eat for a reasonable price. The tides have been really low all along the Texas coast for a couple of months.
