Default Avet Pro EX Wide 30/2

Does anyone have experience with this specific model? I've heard and seen lots of good about Avets but not much on the 30. I believe it's a relatiely new model from them. I was looking to add a set of 50s to the arsenal, but these seem to fit the bill pretty well. The listed drag appears to be comparable to the 50WLRSA and at a full 2 lbs lighter and a lot less $$$, I think they might be worth a shot. One concern is line capacity, but with spectra backing (80 or 130), I should be able to get more than enough. We fish S. Louisiana out of Venice, Fourchon, etc for YFT up to 150 lbs and wahoo up to 75-80 lbs. I'd like to buy from our sponsors but didn't want to pull the trigger until I got a little feed back here.

Also, any reccomendations on what rods to pair them with would be appreciated. I've been happy with all of my Stars but snapped an 80 lb Hand Crafted this weekend with only 18 lbs of drag. Not saying that I wouldn't go back with a Star, but also wanted to consider any other options. I like the Chaos line up but didn't see any that matched up with the Avet real well. Any thoughts?

I have a 4/0 EXW2. It is my first two speed reel. It is also my first lever drag reel. I have been unable to use it. Last year I had plenty of invites from buddies to jump on lump or overnight tuna trips, but those have been non-existant this year.

What I wanted to contribute to you was that Chaos will be at the New Orleans boat show in March. If you can wait until then maybe getting a feel of the different rods may help.

Good luck on your search!

Gary,

Thanks for the input. I saw Chaos a few years ago at the NO boat show and was pretty impressed. Only problem is they offer 30-50 and 50-100 class rods, and I think the Avet 30W would be best suited for a 30-80 or 50-80. Guess I'll have to do some more looking.

The Avet Ex pro 30 W is a little bit more reel than its predecessor the 4/0 EXW.. I fish the lumps too as well as big wahoo off Destin Fla and have never had a problem with line capacity.. Mine are spooled with 65-80 lb spectra (500 yds or so and a 100 yd mono topshot. The Pro EX 30w should have a bit better line capacity to boot.. I think these would be a great match for ya.

780/80 hollow braid is what they say it will hold with a modest topshot , I have bought 4 avet MXL's last spring and am happy with them, now I'm looking for 2x 30 widths but am afraid that Avet has little or no service in Europe.
On a side note we fished the ST 50-100 chaos rods with 135# hollow braid and they were hard to bent fishing them stand up. Now I was looking with Chaos for some more bentable??(is this a word)rods but they said the ST 30-50 is one size down, I think it's to light for 30 reels that will be fished with 20 to 25 pounds of drag at strike.
Any input will be welcome.
thanks

Ben

Don't hesitate. Get the 30/2. It is a fantastic reel (and a great looker too!). Search the net for the '05 prices (should be $469 for the wide).
I have two Avet EXW 30/02 reels paired with a Chaos STA 50-100 and a Chaos BTA 50. I really don't see how these are not PERFECT pairs!
By the way, Chaos does NOT offer any "boat show" discount prices on their rods. I was just at the NY boat show and their prices were the same as the ones posted on their site. Couldn't talk them into a discount either!
As for your rod snap... that is really strange. Maybe the reel got stuck for a few secs. I have had that happen to me (Okuma reel) but just lost the tuna (line snapped) thank god!. Just curious.

nick,

Thanks for the input. I think I'm going to give Chaos a call tomorrow. How do you have your 30s spooled? I was thinking to go with 135 spectra backing and 80 lb mono topshot for now and drop down to 50 lb topshot in the summer as the fish tend to run smaller then. As far as the rod snap, I think we must have gotten a nick in the rod somehow before getting out. We were fishing Tiarga 50WLRSs with pretty light drags. Good thing is we got the fish in and recovered the other half of the rod.

Take a look at calstars or seeker black steel for rods as a couple of alternatives. As far as the reels go I fish an Avet 50w for big tuna, and the Pro 30s I have seen look to be a smaller version of the same reel. Just to clarify Avet makes both the EXW 4/0 and the Pro 30W. These reels are the same size from a line capacity standpoint and look almost the same. The big difference is the Pro 30 pulls at least 50% more drag. Rigged with 500 of 80 braid and a 100 yd topshot of 80 these can be set with 27-30 lbs at strike and 40+ at sunset, just make sure to use big enough hooks that won't pull.

Ben,

I just recently did this research...got my 4 Pro 30 wides today in fact. I obviously haven't had a chance to fish them yet, but my first impressions are WOW!! A relatively light reel with the capability of providing drag like a 50. Advantages over the 4/02...drag, a more conventional clicker (like their 50s), and a slightly larger frame. I had mine spooled with 50# mono and got 500 yards. I considered backing with 80# JB hollowcore and topshotting and was told to expect 700 yds (500 backing, 200 mono topshot) but opted for the straight mono.

I have mine mounted on 30-50# Sceptre rods and plan to use them for my flats and short riggers.

Avet just raised there prices to be more in line with the competition's reels so it is unfortunate you weren't able to take advantage of it but IMO you still can't go wrong with 'em ( I am obviously biased). I wanted to go with a THT vendor as well but when I added the spooling and the other items I was purchasing (3 50/2 EXWs and Crowder rods) it was more advantageous for me to go with someone else. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me .

$469 at www.charkbait, with free mono, reel bag, and shipping. The new improved 30W is a real good reel, but I am going with the 50W's, as they will handle what you want to do, and will go heavier too.

Thanks guys. Just ordered a pair from charkbait and should have them in a few days. Great deals from those guys. I'll be putting them to use sometime next week and will let everyone know my first impressions as soon as I get a chance to break them in.

Ben,

I personally don't see the need for the 135lb spectra, unless you get a great deal on the hollow stuff and then do a wind-on leader. But even then 80-100lb hollow spectra would be fine for this reason. I have 100lb PowerPro backing (~600y) and 80lb mono leader (~150y) on my 30/2 that I use with my Chaos STA 50-100 rod (80lb setup), and 65lb PowerPro backing (500y) with 50lb momoi diamond mono (~230y) on my other 30/2 that I use with my Chaos BTA 50 rod (powerfull 50lb setup). Most rod makers do not recommend exceeding their rod's max line lb strength. So 135lb line on a 80lb rod seems dangerous. The Avets will most likely handle the strain but will your rod do the same? Wondering if my rod will break in the middle of a fight is the last thing going through my mind. Just my 2c

Jerry Brown's 130# is much less expensive than 80# (and probably easier for splicing too).

If the drag is set properly, the rod should be fine.

I pulled in 2 tuna just last week at around 150-180 lbs each on this reel in less than 30 minutes. I rigged it with 135 lb spectra and an 80 lb topshot. I like the 50 SDS also, but the 30 is lighter and easier to handle/cast with.
