Default world's largest fishing reel

Supposedly, Everol's 18/0 reel is the largest in the world.

It weighs 11#'s, has 100#'s of drag, and holds nearly 1000 yds of 200# mono.

Anybody ever use these reels? Ive seen pictures of them being used, but does anyone have any first-hand experience?

Pretty neat drag system...

And only $1200 for an 18/0 two-speed reel? Not bad...

I 've used the 50 type before and didn't particularly care for it. I think it was more to do with the condition of the reel I was using than anything else. The drag kept on slipping as I would crank. They have a very, very good reputation in the Mediterranean and elsewhere in Europe.

I wonder how many feet of 1/2 line it can spool.....it looks big enough to be used as a windlass for my anchor.

Really like to see on of these monsters rigged up. Does it seem like it has a thin crank, for such a big reel? I know my 9/0 FinNor's have one of the thickest cranks I've seen. (Boy could this be interpreted the wrong way)

Everol has been around forever and is very popular in Europe. They're made in Italy and are battle tanks. They are pretty much a gold Senator with a lever, nothing fancy but rugged. I've heard parts are hard to get in the States.

That was my thought... the thing looks like a boat winch.

Yes, that comparison falls a bit short. Everol was among the first true lever-drag big game reels, predating Penn, Shim, Duel and just about everyone else except Fin-Nor. There were others of course, but none who stayed. The drag system remains unique, and is largely unchanged over the years, along with the rest of the reels. This means that parts are usually the same over a range of reels and decades. Dedicated parts are available through service centers in Miami and New York among others. Generic parts like screws are available at the hardware store.

Besides being popular in Europe, they've long been a standby in Hawaii, Cairns and Canada, as well as the Eastern seaboard of the USA. Not leastly right here at The Hull Truth. Capt Squiddly and others who want to know more can do a search right here on Reel Talk.

As far as the 18 / 0 goes, yes- it is a whopper. It is mostly made by demand from commercial tuna guys, who just didn't have anything big enough. By comparison, an entire 130-size reel fits in the spool window of an 18 / 0. Ant 1 asked about the crank thickness. It is about 6 mm and stainless steel. It'll hold. Bear in mind that it is also longer than usual on comparatively sized reels. The smaller reels use a 5-6 mm thick aluminum crank arm.

Doc.

I have a much smaller everol for striper fishing. Very nicely made piece of machine that I got from Chris/AKA Tunatoys who hangs out at Noreast.com. Im' not quite sure, but I believe he machines prototypes for them or something ? Anyway, if you need parts, he is the one to talk to.
