RE: Hawaii Fishing..... If you care to try some shore/surf fishing for the "Big Kahuna", there is the "ulua", a pacific jack(Giant Trevally)
that grows way over 100 lbs. You're best bet would be a sandy beach with the least amount of coral heads possible.
Ulua are famous for break offs on ANY structure. Snorkel a reef in the day for a couple of "tako"(small octopus). They are easy to get with a Hawaiian sling spear. Use the legs or even a whole one on a big circle hook.Keep them fresh on ice. I like a shark leader with a digger weight(6 oz.) that I can cast, but baits are sometimes better paddled out and dropped off further out. 12-14 ft. stiff surf caster and what ever reel you're man enough to handle...
