Default Kona (Hawaii) charters- which one ?

It looks like I'm headed to Hawaii in late March to tag along with the admiral. Though we're staying on Oahu, I'm thinking about taking a puddle-jumper to fish a day or two out of Kona. I know charters are available on all of the islands, but Kona seems to be the place for the best Hawaii has to offer. This might be my only trip there, so I'm thinking I might as well experience Kona while I'm that close.

A little Internet research indicates that there are over 100 charter boats on "the big island". Anyone have any personal experience and / or recommendations? Do I go with some of the familiar names (such as Marlin Magic, Northern Lights, as well as many others often written about in Marlin magazine), or are there lesser-known outfits that are considered top-notch?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks

Since Bart Miller has been gone for quite some time, Jeff Rogers is the man.

Thanks.

I sent Jeff Rogers an e-mail concerning prices and availability. Lots of info on his website:

You might want to also look up the "Medusa" captained by Steve Kaiser. I have fished a few times with Steve and have had a great time.

I was there in Jan 2000 and stumbled upon Captain Jerry Allen, owner of the Sea Dancer, 31' Bertram, rigged for bear.
At the time, he was the only charter boat that I saw who promoted release of billfish. Fished with him two days and had a great experience. Outstanding rates, too.
Enjoy!

We have had a chance to fish with Captain Jerry on the SeaDancer. He is a knowledgeable Captain with good equipment and he helped 'THE' FishDancer catch and release pound pacific blue marlin estimated at 350-400 pounds. We also have fished with the Northern Lights (rates 2x SeaDancer's) but a beautiful ride (restored Merritt). Kona is a great place with many choices. Go see the ancient fishing village at Lapakahi its a beautiful and restful place as well as the inspiration for our fishing team.
