Default Spinning outfit for light boat use

Hi All,
I'd like some advice on selecting a couple of spinning
outfits for light boat use. I have a 24 Albemarle and will be
fishing while anchored or moored. Fishing mostly for stripers
and blues in Mass.. Will be using chunk bait and light lures.
Would like short and responsive rods with some durability.
Somewhat partial to Penn reels but not happy with anti-
reverse set up on 5500ss. Thank you for your advice
Usually troll but can't afford $4.35 a gallon gas.
Thank You Misfit Toy.

G-Loomis Pro Blue and Bucara are very nice rods and are good for chunking, eeling are casting larger lures. Might be tough to find a rod that is good for both chunks and really light lures. You can find pretty good deals on ebay. I would stay away from the newer Penn spinning stuff... I broke both the liveliner and slammer in less one season.

The Diawa BG90 is still a good value. Very durable.

Hi Misfit...

Spent more than a few days of my wayward youth chasing blues and stripers in and around Cape Cod and the Vinyard. Beautiful country...

Not sure what your budget is, so that make recommendations tough... I would suggest looking at 12lb and 15lb spinning rigs, using the lb test monofiliment, though braided lines are clearly an option. I've been real happy with my Penn Liveliner 560's, but to each his own.

Diawa's BG series spinners are pretty much the same at the Penn SS series as far as I'm concerned, so I'd recommend looking at Shimano. The Stradi 4000 and 5000 reels would work for you for about $130 a piece. If you want something a little nicer, upgrade to the Sustain series, about $230 each in the same size.

For rods, stick with graphite. GLoomis' LR844 would work as the 12lb rod, matched with a Stradic 4000. As far as the 15lb rod, GLoomis' new Pro Blue series rods are extremely sensitive and will run you about $240 each. Match their 7' 12-25lb spinner with a Sustain 5000 and you're in business for about $500. Save $100 and put a Stradic on it.

Oh, one last reel option -- Shimano's Baitrunner 3500....

Good Luck,

Prop Blast

Shimano Stradic 4000

Rogue SJ 704S 7' 0"

12lb. Jinkai

Ive caught weakfish to 9lbs. and stripers to 35lbs. on this exact setup. I also use it as a bait rod for makeral and shad. I highly recommend it.

You might also consider the Shimano Baitrunner 4500 or the bigger 6500, I like "STAR" Rods, and I own a few FALCON rods also. They may do the trick for you.

The Stradic is a nice reel but just can't get over the Kitchen Aide look. If you like Penn it's pretty hard to beat the Penn Liveliner. A 460 Liveliner loaded up with braid will whip any Blues or Striper in the ocean with ease.

There are a lot of good rods out there but it's hard to beat the Bass Pro Extreme rods for value. They’re sensitive, light weight and a sport a lifetime no questions asked warranty to boot. Couple the Extreme rod, with a Liveliner reel, and you have a good solid combo for under $200

I love the Shimano stradic. But, if you're looking to save a few bucks *about 30 or so, the Spheros series is bulletproof. The 4000 of either series is perfect. I would spool them with 20 lb power pro, and use a three to five foot mono or flouro leader (20 lb).

As far as matching it to a rod, the choices above are all good ones, though I am also a fan of the Shimano Clarus series. They have backbone, are light and are a great deal for the money (figure 59 bucks for a seven footer).

good luck.

I've got me a pair of 10ft Eagle Claw glass surf sticks with Penn 704 reels mounted on them that I use for pitchin' live baits and doubling for running my flat lines. I found them at a garage sale. The lady only wanted 20 bucks for the pair. I gave her a hundred. She was happy and so was I. They've held up very well for the last ten years. I generally don't use rods that long, but you can't turn down a good deal.

Hi Gang,

I'd like to thank all of you for the response.
I think I'm going to try either a Diawa or Shimano
reel and a graphite rod. I'll be looking for a budget
graphite rod ,I'd like to keep it around 6ft or so ,I'm
moored in an area that's pretty congested so casting
distance isn't a big concern. Please help me narrow
down my rod choice.
Thanks Again, Misfit Toy

I have a couple of these & really like them: http://www.basspro.com/servlet/catal...rTarget=browse

They also have the same rods paired with different reels at a nice discount

I have a couple of Shimano Stratics as well and love them. They hold up very well and believe me I am hard on my equipment.

Got a couple Shimano Spheros on 7' light action rods and 10lb test.....they have been good for me and are small enough for my kids to handle.

for what you describe a 7 foot rod would be my choice....maybe one a bit lighter action....6 1/2 would be too short...i bought a couple of conventional rods...penn mariners i think, but penn for sure....i like the action for the money i spent

i have a couple of 3500 baitrunners i like......4500 is good, but too much reel for what you describe

i usually spool my spinning reels up with the middle size mono line suggested on the side of the spool...it seems that the heavier lines don't cast well, and the lighter ones just aren't strong enoughl

Quantum Cabo pt 40 and match it with a St croix rod and in your business. I have that same one and love it. I like the cabo series reels better than my SuStain reels. That says a lot.

I've used a BG60 and a 25# rated 7' Tallus rod and it fishes great for blues, stripers, or even that stray mako that comes along. Strong and reliable.
