Default Why are Luhr Jensen Dipsy Divers not used here in FL?

Is it because of the 2.5 to 3mph trolling speed? They read like a great product, but I've never used one? Anyone have ANY INFO onthem?? Good? Bad?

Yeah, I used them when they first came on the market back in the mid-80's. They work pretty good, but my downriggers work better.

up here in Lake Michigan we use them heavily along with downriggers while trolling for salmon. You can adjust the tension settings based on trolling speed. We sometimes troll up to 5mp with them when targeting steelhead.

We run 3 riggers (one off each corner, one in the center stern) plus two dipseys on each side forward of the corner rigger in horizontal rod holders. You can adjust the counter weights on the bottom, usually the furthest back dipsey on 1.5 and the front dipsey on 3. They pull down and out based upon this counterweight.

We typically use the snubbers behind the dipsey to lessen the shock from the hit, and typically use braid/dacron/wire line for the mainline to the dipsey which helps it cut down and out quicker with less bow to it.

They are DEADLY, and I have used them along with riggers and leadcore when targeting kings/mackeral/wahoo when fishing saltwater.

Im up on lake michigan also and run dipseys all the time off of power pro or equivelent.. I go to the keys 2 months a year but have not tried that for wahoo... what speed are you running them for your wahoo and what are you dialing them in at? What bait are you pulling behind the snubber? Wire leader I assume? How many FOL or depth are you typically running it?

ever try pulling 16oz pound balls in the same fashion when trolling for the wahoo? we rull pound ball rigs all the time up here inside of our dipseys that are dialed on 1-1.5 and 3 - 2 per side.

thanks

Reasons you don't use them in ocean:
1) higher trolling speeds (planers work though) Dipsy divers don't work well
2) you can't put a big lipped plug behind one b/c it can make the Dipsy diver flip over
3) The fish you are catching (may) swim really fast (kings, dolphin, 'hoos etc.) I wouldn't want this big extra disk between me and the fish. A salmon is a sporting fish but it ain't no king.
