Default Monomoy Island MA, Fishing Question

Can anyone tell me about the fishing in the Chatam area and Monomoy Flats? I am planning a trip there at the end of August. I was wondering if the waters are too big for a 17' Boston Montauk. I am used to fishing inland rivers back bays mostly inshore.

Thanks

You're definitely fine in the flats behind Monomoy. In good weather and sea conditions you should be fine out front for stripers and blues if you go out through the cut by the seals. There's a nice ramp in So Chatham on the Oyster River that puts you minutes from the flats. Good luck.

MSD, if you are a flyfisherman, you are about to make a pilgrammage to Mecca... if you are not, buy a flyrod and get a guide for a half day even though you have a boat. Sight fishing for stripers on the flats with a fly is as good as it gets... maybe anywhere for anything... maybe.. yep, could be..

Stay Tuna-ed!

Default Monomoy Island MA, Fishing Question

I live On the cape and fish around Monomoy on a regular basis, Don't do any real flats fishing, but it is popular. Your boat should be fine for the skinny water, pay close attention to the tides. You should also do fine in your boat on the east side of the island. Wind is generally SW at this time of year and you will be on the leeward side. Remember that heavy (I can't see the bow of the boat) fog is a common occurence that creates very dangerous situations. If you do not have radar, it is best to avoid the fog. People get run over all too frequently in these waters. If you do happen to venture out the East side, Follow the coastline south and you will see a few Rips within striking distance of your whaler. Try them, in my opinion they will give you a better chance at larger Stripers than on the Flats. The fish sit on those rips to feed and are less spooky than the Flats fish.If all else fails, put a sand eel colored slug-go on. Stripers go nuts for those things. Good Luck
