Default Bluefishing in Long Island Sound

I will be going on a charter boat out of City Island or Freeport (not sure yet) in mid August. How will the bluefish be running at this time. Will be taking my cousin for his first saltwater trip. Any charter recomendations?
Thanks

Mid aug is a good time for blues out of City Island. The sound is ussually jumpin with blues in aug. As for Freeport most of the charters go to 17 fathoms for ocean blues. If you go out of Freeport expect a long ride out to the fishing ground. City Island you will have screeming reels in the first hour. Good Luck

Ocean Breeze- inthepocket is right.
Another consideration is the strange weather that we have had this year. While having some impact on the fisheries, it is something to consider if your cousin doesn't have "sea legs". You are less likely to be troubled by a nasty sea sailing from City Island, than from the Freeport. And of course, a shorter ride.

I fish the sound not to far from there. Used to be docked in New Rochelle. I am now up in Norwalk CT though. Caught 5 blues this past weekend. Biggest was only 25 inches though...City Island area has good fishing.

I've seen your boat before out on the sound. Thats sweet Mako you got their. How is the fishing on the CT side of the sound? The only spots on the CT side Ive really fished is 32a and have done good their almost everytime out. Do you fish the triangle often? I ve had great luck with the bass in the bayville center island area this season. Hope the sound is treating you well.

We gotta get you out on the sound one of these days. Alot more relaxing fishing for the inshore species and twice as less boat traffic then the south shore. Have you gaffed any nice sharks or Tuna lately?

In the Pocket, THANKS
I just moved the boat up to Norwalk this year. I was in the triangle and over by Eatons Neck Point this past weekend.
Fishing seems to be better so far closer to you. I am thinking about trying Middle Ground, Some Spots in Stamford and so on and will let you know. Fact is I am learning the area. Last year I fished Mamaroneck, Larchmont, Rye,and so on. I wish we had Hull Truth flags or something so we could wave each other down.
What is the name of your boat?
Hydrasport with a hardtop? Outboards?

See ya on the water..tight lines

inthepocket-
Alas, my tuna/shark gaffs are still unbloodied so far this year. Thought there was a chance last week but 2 shark tourneys were called off and didn't want to go in my 22' with a heave on. Just not that adventurous any more!

Been a while sincec I fished the sound. Born and raised in the Bronx, I used to do it all the time from City Island and New Rochelle. I go back as far as Pete Pearson's Klondike III, Ebb Tide, Hel Cat, Apaches, Rip Tide and a few I forgot the names of. Then there was the "fleet" from Hunts Point: Bronx Queen and Claires. You know what I am talking about?

Mackerel runs off Playland in AUGUST! How does that hit you?

I don't blame you for not being to adventurous.I dont think I would wanna be in 8 footers on 22 foot boat even if its Cat. I will have to try the rye area this year for mackerel. Whats good bait for mackerel. I ve never fished for them. I'm pretty new to fishing and boating. I've been fishing the sound and taking my yearly charter for tuna /shark in Montauk for the last 6 years. Your welcome to bloody my boat any time. I will have to trailor down to captree one day and let you show me the ropes south shore style.

inthepocket- I don't know if they even catch mackerel in the sound anymore. I was referring to the 70's when there was a mackerel fishery up there and you would jig them on mackerel "trees" until your arms fell off.

Nowadays, like this year, the mackerel run is literally that, a RUN! They were off FI Inlet for like 2 days and gone with the blues nipping at their heels.

I used to catch mackerel all the time at Locust Point Yacht Club under the Throggs Neck Bridge. You could fish all day for them. Long time ago, at least 20 years. Also used to catch them in the Hutchenson River by Ferry Point Park..

I guess I will have to go after the false albacore that comes in at the end of aug. I'm jonesing to use my 50tw and get in to some tuna or shark.
BigE
How far do I have to go from FI inlet to get in to some tuna and shark. 30 40miles offshore? Would that get me to some of those Gps numbers you posted a couple of months ago. My hydra sport will only let me get out that far. I got a 130 gallon tank and thats about as far out as I would go with watchin the weather of course. What do you think.

You can definitely do some sharking within 30-40 miles. The sharking has been pretty good (quantity) recently anywhere from 20 miles on out. Since your drifting most of the time, you'll be conserving fuel.

The tuna are doable as well. Right now, there has been "seek and destroy" type fishing primarily on blue fin. Guys are going out to the 30 fathom curves and wrecks and seeing a lot of life including the tuna. They are doing a lot of trolling and having limited success since the fish are finicky. Once the waters warm up more (inshore), they should respond to chumming in closer areas. It's all a matter of timing, water temps and quality, and weather.

Several guys I know are going offshore to the canyons for overnighters this weekend. I'm waiting to see what news they bring back! It definitely looks more promising for inshore tunna this year than last!

I fish between Norwalk and Bridgeport everyday, weather permitting. As of this am, and all last week, there were live bunker between Burying Hill Beach, in 30-35' of water, and Penfield Reef, between 25-50' of water. Large schools are getting hammered by very large stripers and blues from 10-16 pounds. We caught a 17lb blue off Southport last Thursday. Largest striper was 47", with a few around 39". Saw one striper swirl on a bunker next to the boat that was in the 40+ lb range. DEP officer said the stripers are more abundent then blues, but we have been catching lots of blues too. Fronts this week may change the picture, but the bait and fish are all over depending on tide.
