Default Ceiling Rod Rack

Just a quick tip on how to make some rugged, yet cheap rod holders to get precious tackle out of the way.

I painted a couple 8 ft 2x2's gloss white. I drilled 1/4" pilot holes for large hooks every 8" or so, and smaller pilot holes for #10 x 2 1/2" coated deck screws. I attached them to my ceiling with the deck screws (into studs). I installed them parallel and even with each other, about 4' apart. I installed vinyl covered hooks in the 2x2's and voila, organized storage for a dozen rods and reels!

Works better than my wall mounted rod holders, and frees up wall space for additional boat toy storage!

That's taking it a step farther that what I did. I put hooks right into the studs in the ceiling and used string to hang my outriggers from them. Now I just need to do something about my rod and reels before the baby starts crawling.....look out!!!!

Sounds like a plan Tidester.

I did something simular with 1x4's and a 2" hole saw. Take 2 lengths of 1x4 and drill equally spaced 2" holes in them. Clean up the holes with sand paper then cut strips of bunk carpet to line them and glue in place. Attach the other two 1x4's to each the edge to form a inverted "L" shape and secure the seperate holders to the ceiling about 4' apart. Paint it if the need hits you.

To store my poles on the garage ceiling I went to Home Depot. Pick up the spring loaded tool holder for brooms and shovels only a couple of bucks. Its all metal and just screw it to the studs in the cieling. It takes about 1 minute to install.
You only need one to hold 5 rods. And its easy to put rods on and off.

Fishin-Fanatic... Here you are...

Cheap, effective and out of harms way. I use them for my outrigger poles too!

Tidester .... Nice Work. A picture (or two) is worth a 1000 words

I may even be capable of a project like that

Done, great idea. Now I have one for you all. Same problem on my boat. What about under a T-top anybody have any ideas. I have four rocket launchers but need some additional storage under the top. Rods are too long or the reels too big to fit into the racks on the sides. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Shoot, that's easy.

Get some horizontal rod holders - Black's plastic ones are cheap, or go with more expensive metal ones like Lees, etc.

Mount them to aluminum tubes and bolt the tubes to the front and rear frame tubes of your t-top with standoffs (nylon bushings, stainless bolts and lockwashers).

It may not be elegant, but it will do the job. A buddy did that and put his gaffs, flyrods, etc up there. Tucked away under canvas, except for the very tips and butts.

I'll e-mail him and see if he can take a picture. He moved to Jax a few years ago.

Thanks Tidester.

Appreciate you taking the time out to show us some of your ideas. I've been looking to do something about my rod storage and you've provided just what I was looking for. Again, thanks!

Thanks Tidester; simple idea and I like it. I wanted to minimize drilling and this will do the trick. Great board for ideas.
