Default Tarpon fishing in SC

Hi...First time in the forum but looks like some a great place to get some info.

I am planning on visiting the Hilton Head area in May or June and would love to catch my fisrt Tarpon. I sure would appreciate any tips on catching or fishing spots in Port Royal sound.
Thanks and tight lines.

Lee,
if you're just visiting for a day or so, break down and hire one of the local guides. There are 2 or 3 in the HH area that specialize in Tarpon, especially late June through early September. Now, if you want to do what many of the locals do and have a fair shot....fish the Broad River Bridge with cut mullet/menhaden on the bottom, with lots of chum. Most folks anchor well upcurrent of the pilings and drop the baits back. Lots of sharks, so heavy mono leaders (some use a wire trace) and circle hooks are in order. There are dozens of other places, but around here they are almost all cut bait/live bait fisheries in stained or muddy water (ie leave the flies behind ). Hope this little bit helps. Cameron

I second the hiring of a guide.

You may also want to check out

There are a lot of great folks on this site and plenty of folks from the HH area post there as well.

The folks on this site are the very best at posting fishing reports(where, when, how, what and all the other details most other folks will not tell you)

Good luck and hold on.
Like ciguaterra said you will catch tons of sharks, redfish and maybe even a cobia or two.

Thanks for the suggestions, I live close to Greenville and make the trip several times a year and will give them a try at Broad River Bridge.
