Default Penn 320 gt 2

Looking at a penn 320 GT 2 reel and a Penn Special Boat rod 20 to 40 lb test Rod seems pretty beefy anyone have any comments on this set up? Going to be used for trolling in the chesapeake bay for strippers.

Make sure you bring a big bucket of $1 bills.

Woops ... maybe you meant stripers?

Don't know what the difference is between GT2 and GTI, but I've loved my GTIs for 10 or 12 years that I've been using them. Caught everything from 5-6# Fat Alberts to 40+ YFT with them. Should be a great reel for Ches rockfish. I fish mine on Slammer rods with roller tips - the Slammers are a hollow blank and the light weight matches up nicely with the (relatively) lightweight graphite GTI. I'd think 20-40# rods might be kinda on the stiff side if you're going to fish with 20# test, I usually like to put line wt in the middle of the rod's rating - i.e. I've got some 12# outfits with rods rated 8-17. I feel differently about heavier tackle - my Intl 30s are mounted on 30-50# rods, but fishing 20#, you might want to take a look for a rod rated maybe 15-30. My $.02

Fuzzy2U I did mean stripers but if there good for strippers I'll diffently try them out.
Sr31AJ the GT2 are the new model that replaced the GTI the only difference is the GT2 is 1.5 ounces heavier. Well I went ahead and bought 2 from Boaters World with the heavy boat rod for 99.00 each. The road is a little heavy but it's light and feels good went out and landed 4 keepers with them so now there even broke in.

Rods AND reels for $99? Good deal, having them perform so well right "out of the box" ain't bad, either. Continued good luck, I know you'll like 'em.

I use a couple GTI/GT2's combined with Medium Heavy Fiberglas rods for cod. They are spooled with 50# spectra and they have a gast retrieve which makes them great for getting down deep and not wearing yourself out on the crank back up. The levelwind makes a huge difference with the spectra too as it can be tough to thumb back and forth on the spool, plus its a snap for beginners. I'd like another combo myself, probably will get another this year. I'm not sure theres a better combo for cod out there. For striper trolling I think these will work well also as long as you have a mono/flouro leader of some sort.

Good luck,
JayB

I recently picked up a couple of rod/reel combo setups from the Bass Pro Shops website. A Penn 320GTI with a 8'6" rod (medium action) for $89.99. Caught my share of Spanish this past weekend pulling #1 planers and Clark spoons with them. The way I figger, the rod was free...the reel by itself is $92.99 on the same Bass Pro Shops website!
