What do you use to get finicky Jacks to eat a bait?? We went out about 10 mi. from Beaufort Inlet Sunday, started chumming and up came the Jacks and Barracuda. We tried cut bait, live bait, casting spoons, and Bucktails?? Need some help for success on the next trip.
you may have been giving them too much chum...slow the chum down by periodically taking it out of the water and dishing it out by hand...epsecially if you are using fairly coarse chum. They will be content with just munching on the chum and won't take your hook baits.

Don't know why you would want to waste bait on a jack. The best way to catch one is to fish for something else. Seriously. If you can see them, they generally won't hit, for some reason. Throw out live baits for kings and troll around in the vicinity and they'll catch on.
Try throwing out a live hardtail. I have had great luck out of Destin lately on the hardtails. I couldn't keep a bait in the water for more than 5 minutes without a bite, but they wouldn't take a live cigar minnow or herring.

I've never fished for amberjacks, but I've heard they get shy when they have been fished real hard. When yellowfin get shy using a light leader can make a big difference. Also, it may help if you get to them first thing in the morning before other boats have had a chance to 'school' them. Good luck. chip.
