I am having my new penn 50s spooled with 80 pound High-Vis line. Some one said to me that you should tie about 50 yards of clear mono, so it doesn't scare the fish. Is this true? What type of knot would you use to tie the two lines together?
Personally have been using hi vis diamond line yellow for several years... cant say that it has hurt our hook up ratios at all..... but that is just my experience .... others may have had something different.
Trolling I do use wind ons that are clear/black,,,,,
I use Hi-Vis but tip it with about 10' of mono. The mono helps to set the hook by allowing some stretch to the line. Too many fish are lost because HI-Vis has no stretch. I tie the mono to the Hi-Vis with a uni knot it's simple to ties and goes right through the guides easily.
read an article in one of "the major mags" a few years ago on this stuff. The spokesmen for each brand of highvis monos was interviewed and each pretty much said their line was designed to make it EASY TO SEE and to use a top shot of clear mono out to the bait.
i run several different colors on my trolling reels. when i get the lines tangled or a fish goes trough the lines while hooked up i know what line goes to what rod and reel and it helps me sort the mess out. i use wind on leaders...rick
mcgolfer, I bought some new halibut reels last summer, and I was told to spool them up with different colors of lines for the same reason - tangled messes are MUCH easier to sort out. This is a great tip.
Hi-Vis is just so much easier to see!!
I used it 2 years ago- last year I didn't for the fear the fishies would see it.
This year after much talk about it I will use it again.
Think about it, when trolling I use a 15ft leader Floro/mono depending on lure size....fish won't see that HI-Vis trolling, but I can which helps getting that perfect wiggle from my lures.
Chunking I use 20 ft leaders of Floro anyway.
I use the HI-Vis dacron as a backing, it does bleed but no worries.
