Default How, when, where do you catch Snapper off NC?

Red Snapper, Vermillion, etc.
I know they hang around wrecks and reefs.
Do you have to drift or do you anchor?
What kind of rig and bait do you use?
I fish around Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, Atlantic Beach, and occasionally Southport. Can you recommend some specific wrecks and reefs?
Are they good fighters?
Do they wrap around structure?
Thanks.

I've asked this same question on several boards and got about the same amount of information as you have!

I'm beginning to think most people that post on boards from NC are way to busy trolling out to the stream catching Kings, Hoos, Dolphin and Tuna to stop and fish the reef bottoms. They may troll over them.

Maybe one day a bottom fisherman will come along and teach us a trick or two.

Most of the head boats out of atlantic beach used to catch lots of red snapper and silver snappper when I was a kid (40 years ago) at the shelf drop off. If I remember it was 200-400 feet deep and sometimes deeper. These areas have been over fished to the point that I seldom see them bring any in anymore. Anyway we would locate the fish over structure with a sounder and drift fish with electric reels and cut squid under 5/0 hooks and 3-6 oz leads. Check on the gulf boards in floridasportsman forum as there are lots of red snapper fisherman there.

pacfan,
Since I too pull for NCSU, I'll help you out. Capt. Anthony Ng is the offshore bottom fishing guru. He lives in Winterville, but fishes out of Morehead. A friend of mine was on the Carolina Outdoors program on WUNC public tv with him and caught all kinds of snapper and grouper. fish-ng.com will get you there.

Good bottom fishing can be found just about anywhere off our coast. Finding the right ledge is the hard part. There aren't many hard-core bottom fisherman, but the ones who are serious are very tight-lipped about where they fish. In NC, the main focus on bottom fishing is probably Grouper, not Snapper.

You can buy a sufficient bottom rig at any tackle store here and then find some live-bait and your in business.

The hardest part will be finding good bottom. Don't expect anybody to give up there secret spot!

It's much easier to get information on where fish like kings, tuna, dolphin, et. have been caught than it is to find good live bottom spots. Fact is that a good bottom spot can get fished out pretty quick by somebody who knows what they're doing around here. Groupers and snappers don't move around as much as the guys on top. Bob Goldstein once told me that you can catch snapper and grouper around live bottom pretty much all year around, but not many people venture out in January to bottom fish.

You should really get an offshore map that show live bottom areas with the coordinates. You can purchase Maps Unique version in most saltwater tackle shops, Tex's. Great maps for bottom fishing or king fishing at hard/live bottoms, wrecks and ARs.
