Default Help With San Diego Fishing

My wife and I will be spending Christmas Holidays in San Diego, CA with our son, who lives there. I'd like to take at least one day, and possibly two, fishing. I've never fished there and I won't have any tackle with me so make up charter or head boat may be my best bet. We'll be there from December 21st through the 28th. Any suggestions or information will be appreciated.

Default Help With San Diego Fishing

Go to sportfishingreports.com this will give a a look into the local fishing reports. Right now Tuna season is really over, and we are into the halibut/sandbass fishing with the ocassional yellow tail. I would recomend at a min a 3/4 day trip out of any of the san diego landings.

Default Help With San Diego Fishing

I spent most of the winter there in 1998 and found it to be the worst fishing area bar none. You can't eat any of the local fish due to contamination and your only alternative is a very expensive charter and many of them are over nighters just to get to decent fish!

If you are a light tackle guy, you may consider one of the inshore/bay specialty guides. San Diego Bay is huge and has lots of spots that hold various bass types and halibut. It's a great alternative to the admittedly cra**y winter fishing we have right now. Go to http://www.sport-fish-info.com/ for more info.

Offshore/ocean fishing will be mostly rock cod trips into Mexican waters-season is closed up here.

Thanks for the responses. I'll do some more checking based upon what you've all said. The quality of the fish (for eating) isn't really a concern; I just want to get on the water and catch something. My boat's winterized in Annapolis, Maryland and I'm still not ready to quit for the year.
