Well I don't feel so bad that my outboard died before there was anything happening in cape cod bay/ stellwagen bank. I just heard some numbers reflecting the poor success of the general category guys. It appears they haven't caught nearly a quarter of their quota for the year. The harpoon boats did something like half or better of their quota early but they are usually all wrapped up by now anyways so it just looks to me like the fish have made themselves scarce around cape cod this season. Heard good things about maine and nova scotia but thats all the catching i've heard (going on way up north). Anyone with the exact figures, i'd love to see them. I got one day in on my own boat (plenty of footballs around) and now i'm holding out for the BB fishery on a couple big boats. I know theres bluefin guys on here- lets hear from ya. Tight lines.
nothing to add, just reinforcing what you said.. terrible season, no keeper size fish on the troll, and not even interesred in wasting fuel to ride south and float around all day.. All reports are no fish other than the lucky one here and there.. there is decent amounts of bait around, there's still time.. fingers crossed..
Fished SW corner of the bank to middle of Cape Cod Bay past few days. Lots of very small schools (football size) jumping. Hard to get close to them, but even when on top of them, hard to get a hit. Tried trolling, casting and chunking, they just don't seem interested. Nowhere near like last year...
Same as Bobb. Fished Yesterday and saw lots of fish - some of the school fish were decent size - I saw a few fish that looked like 80# fish or better. Trolled everything I have over them - cruised up to them and cast to them - nothing. Tunabomber is right - there is still a lot of bait around. Let's hope it turns around.
Atleast there has been fish in the bay, the football's on the east side have completely dissappeared. Plenty of whale's and even more bait, Fish were starting to show before the first hurricane (right after labor day) went by, after that they vanished but the bait stayed. Go figure
Maybe the turnaround we were looking for: word on the streets is a handful of fish came from between the bay and the bank and all met the big white box trucks today. Keep your ears open and your eyes peeled boys. I don't have the numbers yet but if you are fishing next to towers and pulpits, then you are in the right place- tons of bait inshore: maybe I can liveline a bluefish out of a kayak since the boat is busted... the ol' nantucket sleighride...
A friend of mine saw numerous giants on Jefferies on Sat. Inshore the water is teaming with bluefish that are chasing peanut bunker and probably eels and herring. Word is, there are some schoold bluefin mixed in with the blues.
Bait everywhere!!! Keep your eyes on the local draggers and lobstermen in Seabrook, Portsmouth, Newburyport and Gloucester.
Those guys know how to kill Tuna and make money when they come inshore (3-7miles).
Not much up to 20 miles east of Chatham lately. Things were heating up out at the BB though before Juan blew by. Lots of whales but not many fish being seen. Ive heard from some plymouth guys the H bouy in the bay is a good place to start.
While the BFT bite might be off so far this year the YFT is hot right now. Getting them as close as 30 miles South of Montauk on a regular basis.
The mahi-mahi fishing was also very good, caught many within sight on Montauk & Block, but starting to wane due to water temps.

Funny you should mension Niantic that's where I'm out of.
YFT have been 40-80lb on the troll plus all the skippies you can haul in. The bigger ones are still around the little fishtails to the canyons.
I go offshore any time the forcast permits. Unfortunatly I'm in the wrong place at the right time, I'v been hanging around South of Block Island to the dump area, my buddies have been hitting the YFT hard around the Horns and South.
Last time out ended the day South of the Horns had a runoff that nearly spooled me then hook pulled. Had to leave was getting dark.
Gonna hit the temp break if it is still in the area next time out.
"Is it worth it", heck any time I can get away from the wife it's worth it fish or not , you decide.
