Hi,somebody test this reels?
I bought last week twice, for to try fish red tuna with 20.lbs line in stand up.
Wich is the best line for this reels? normaly I use monofilament (Jinkai,Cajun),is better multifilament?
I preset the drag in full strike in 15 lbs.
This questions are, because never try to fish tuna with this light equipe (ever avet 50 lbs).
Thanks in advance
Welcome Sniper , to help you on your way you should set your drag about 33% of the line rating.
Normally it's like 25 to 33%.
Why wouldn't you use them for Tuna although I wouldn't use them for anything over 100 pound but I think they don't crow much bigger around Barcelona(hope you proof me wrong)
If you spool them with 50 pound power pro you can put 300 meter on and still have room for about 125meter mono, that will do the trick for most fish and you can put the drag at 15 pound.
I just have bought and fished 4 of the MXL's in florida and like them very much.
Welcome to The Hull Truth. Another member from the other side of the pond!!!!
I bought 2 Avet LX's this winter. I have not used them yet.But Marti's advice is correct. Avets are made specifically for Spectra Braid like Power Pro. They will work with anything, but modern braid was what the designers had in mind. Use a Mono "Top Shot" and you will be all set.
I can't speak to Red Tuna or any Tuna on your side of the ocean. But as Marti said any small tuna should be OK on these reels. Anything big...well you will have a story to tell but no fish to eat....Of course I can't determine what is "big" and what is "small" in your seas.
Thanks, for your answers my intention is to fish red tunas of more or less 30 to 60 pounds per piece with this kind of reels ( 20 lbs ) . Unfortunetly over here we do not have either sailfish or marlins in our seas, but thank god we do have very large red tunas that can go over 800 lbs....ah, ah...the heaviest I fished was 605 lbs.
Obviously I fished it with an 80 lbs line and a leader of 180 lbs. I did not use any trolling but the sport fishing skill used throughout the meditarrenean of tossing sardines in the water as bait .
The biggest capture that I know is 1.100 lbs.
In any case buddies, I could easily exchange you sea for mine as I know yours and you got plenty.
....30 to 60 pound tunas and you should be OK on a MXL.* But that is about as large a fish I would target with those...
...over 800 pounds and you would get a very fast and*violent way to strip your line for re-spooling and a sudden need to replace your drag washers.....at the very least.
BTW, I'll be across the bay from your corner of the Med this summer....Corsica...But I don't think I'll be fishing for Tuna....too bad for me.
Sniper if you can post a picture of those red tuna, I never heard of them and I'm curious(as always I may add )
you can also sent it to my email adress and I can post it.
thanks
Hi,Martin I try to send the picture of tuna but the problem is that I have not scanner and the picture was made in a normal camera,no in a digital camera.
In any case I will try to send it.
15lbs at strike is a little high for that reel. Does it feel tight. If it does your putting too much pressure on the bearing. It should be around 10lbs at strike, 15lbs max.
If tuna is a target go with braid for capacity on a small reel.
East coast tackle, I think they can handle it but youre right about the drag setting at strike, 15 pounds strike drag will put a lot of power on that little reel and a 6/1 gear real will be a little harder to fight the big Tuna.
Theoretical a inexperienced fisherman like me can fish 1:3 like 20 pound line to 60 pound tuna but than also theory a good fisherman can do 5 :1 and experts have been documented 11: 1 will come alive (LOL)
There is a lot that can be said about this topic but there are so many factors involved, will you fight the fish or winch it in ,can you fight the fish in a very mobile boat or are you with 10 persons on a ship etc etc
oeps forgot what I came for,
Sniper, I think they are Bleufin Tuna but still like to see the picture if you ever see a chance
Sniper, what is the name of these "red tuna" en espanol? We are all curious to know what they would be called here. I think marti is right "atun rojo" is Thunnus Thynnus, which is our Atlantic bluefin tuna.
If you use the 30# you can get 450m plus a topshot of 20-30 mono which will subdue upto 200# fish no sweat 10# at strike is fine mark 15 and don't go above that w/30# don't go above 10 w/20# and use less strike with the 20 as well

Nomans your information is right,el "Atun Rojo"is your bluefin tuna and the scientific name is thunnus thynnus.
Next month started the fishing time of this especie, because they are coming to Lion gulf and sardinia coast for your sexual cicle.
Now in Spain the minimun legal size is 25 pounds.
Best regards.
Do the blue fin (thunnus thynnus) head north from Sardinia to Corsica? Would they be off the coast of Corsica in July/August? I doubt I could pull a charter crew together, but it is an idea....
I've never wet a line in the Med. But if I am there I'd like to know my options. Of course I realize that I am asking about a body of water that is pretty darn far away from Spain....but on a clear day you can just about see Sardinia from Corsica.....Bonifacio and the little islands off Bonifacio (Lavezzi)
There are bill fish in the Medeterainian other than sword fish. I know because I caught a short billed spear fish (we think that is what it was) in 1998. I think we were west of Sardinia in the Tyrrhenian sea. We were using a green machine if I rememmber. I may have photos back in the U.S. I also hooked a big thunnus thynnus in the Adriatic the same year, but lost it because the Penn 9/0 would not stop the monster. I swear it looked like a blue volkswagon come up and eat the lure. I hope you catch lots of fish.
As a side note we just left Cartagena last week- I love your country.
