thought i'd post this just for fun. when's the last time you took a kid fishing? i mean really fishing. not a day when you went fishing and dragged a kid along. a day when you went out to specifically teach a kid how to catch fish. these two boys belong to a buddy of mine (i have daughters). he wanted to take his sons fishing, so we went in my boat for local rockcod. we caught and safely release 100 rockcod, kept only 20 (half limits for each of us), and had a great time. i hung all the fish on a gaff, had the kids grab each end, told them to lift it as high as they could and yell at the top of their lungs!

There is nothing more fun than fishing with kids (if they behave and are patient). You get to play guide and tell them "mmm, look at that cloud, the fish will bite", "explain structure", "get them excited", then when the fish hit
Her is a pic at my cottage. We have learned that it is easier to fish off my rock as it is an Island and we seem to get more than in the boat. It seems that they fish like to travel.
We simply put a minnow on a hook and a big bobber. All the kids sit and watch. Of course, they are all trained to scream "fish on" when the bobber dissapears under the water. Then, all heck breaks loose.
We had a time last year when we had two Pike on at once ... not easy with nine year olds. They don't care about the size, or species, they spend more time arguing about "who" the fish belongs too ... I called it, my rod etc ... kind of funny.
Here is a sample shot of a few of the kids.
Oh yea, unless it is a nice sized Walleye, we teach them to release everything else.
Can't figure out how to post them here, I will post them in the Picture Section.

The benifits of taking kids fishing go on and on. My 13 year old is more fluent in Furuno than I could ever be and has eyes like a hawk! It took a while to get him to handle bait, though My 26 year old daughter got her first sailfish last year and is "hooked" as well. Only my older son (15) has resisted the siren call of fishing; he lives to surf and refuses to understand why we won't take him closer to that great off-shore (REEF!) break
I take all the kids in the neighborhood mackeral fishing This is a lock n load fishery in the spring up here My girlfriends kids live down the street from a small pond last year after taking all the kids fishing they started haveing their "tournaments" at the pond secretspots secret place to dig worms The funny thing is for the first 10 years(more for the older kids) they looked at that pond just to throw rocks at the ducks n geese Now they don't spook the birds because that spooks the fish and the bragging rights. They release everything so they can catch it again The parents of all the kids can't believe these are the same monsters of a couple years ago. All they needed was rods n reels I picked up 10 rods at a yard sale for 25$ and went through them new line etc they did the rest pretty satisfiing for me
Oh Yeah!!* Took the son out Father's Day morning, 1980.* Brian was twelve...we were in our 19' Aristocraft...must admit, I knew very little about trolling then...was terribly hung over...had been up all night with his mother (the Admiral)...Mom asked us to be home for holiday dinner about noon...OK!!
Splashed the boat about daybreak, headed out of Port Everglades channel...let Brian drive, into the sun, 'cause I'm too sick...sucking coffee & cigarettes, feet on the dash, trying to keep it all down.
One rigged 'hoo back there, one line out, I think a Penn 113??
One mile east of the whistle buoy, reel briefly sings three times...we'd busted through a weed line a moment before...sh$t, a load of weeds...get up, pick up the rod, screw it, set the hook or bust the weeds off.* Three mighty heaves, and a LARGE sail explodes out of the water 150 yds astern, tail walks for a moment or so, then takes off for Jacksonville...Brian answers the call for "Idle..Neutral".
I ask..."you want him?"...sure, he says...forty five minutes later, he has the fish along side...fish was tail wrapped, and losing color by now...Bri says, beaming..."Mom said we could mount anything I caught"...remember, this is 1980 or so...insured the fish was in fact dead, hauled him aboard, and was home by 8:00 AM.* Fishing expert neighbors heard us driving in, thought something was wrong, came running out...really pi$$ed them off...we're home two and half hours after leaving with an 8', 43# Atlantic sail...and he belonged TOTALLY to the kid...who's now 36, and fishes out of a yak!!* Happy Father's Day!!* (yeah)
